A study on the foreign place notation in TAESEOSINSA - Focusing on INJIJEMYEONGPYO - "TAESEOSHINSA(泰西新史)” is a publication based on "The Nineteenth Century : A History” written by an English author Robert Mackenzie (马懇西) in 1880. These historical writings were contained in series under the title of “GEOKROK TAESEO GEUNBAEKNYEONRYAEDAESAGI(摘錄泰西近百年來大事記)” printed in "MANGUKGONGBO(滿國公報)” by GWANGHAKHOI(廣學會) from March, 1894, in the later era of Qing Dynasty, and later published in a book titled as “TAESEOSHINSARAMYO(泰西新史攬要)” following the interest and awareness of the ruling class meeting the Western culture at that time. In the Korean Empire, the writings were published as "泰西新史 (TAESEOSHINSA)", the Chinese language edition, and “TAESEOSHINSA (ᄐᆡ서신ᄉᆞ)”, the translated edition to Korean language in 1897 by the Empire’s HAKBUPYEONJIPGUK (text editorial office). “TAESEOSHINSA” is characterized for recording names of international persons and places in Chinese characters by including “INJIJEMYEONGPYO(人地諸名表)”. As many books introducing international histories and cultures were translated by missionaries when Korea was opening, names of persons and places were translated in various ways without specific discussions on specifications so that a great deal of confusions were produced for readers. Therefore, such partial place names systematically specified in “INJIJEMYEONGPYO” included in "TAESEOSHINSA(泰西新史)”are greatly meaningful for providing a measure to reduce readers’confusions and errors during such chaotic period. This study aims to analyze the trend of overseas place names specified in Chinese characters at that time by analyzing the recordings in "TAESEOSHINSA(泰西新史)" and examining the meaning of INJIJEMYEONGPYO. This study is composed of total three chapters: Chapter 1 examines the original edition of "TAESEOSHINSA(泰西新史)” by the Empire editorial office and the social background and historical meaning of "TAESEOSHINSARAMYO(泰西新史攬要)”pressed through GWANGHAKHOI(廣學會) in the later years of Qing Dynasty. Also, analyses on the meaning of Korean translation in the Korean Empire era and the book’s impact to the modern era of Korea are included in this chapter. Chapter 2 contains analyses of the specific interpretations in the Korean edition through ten provisions of exemplifications, “YEOKBONSEO(譯本序)” and HAKBUPYEONJIPGUKJUENSIK(學部編輯局增識) in "TAESEOSHINSA(泰西新史)" as well as the meaning of record of “INJIJEMYEONGPYO”. Chapter 3 covers the multi-angled analysis of specification trend of overseas place names in INJIJEMYEONGPYO. First, the specification types in INJIJEMYEONGPYO are classified and analyzed by certain natural characteristics. Through the comparison with “SEOYUGUYEONMUN(西遊見聞)", trends of specifications used in Korea, China and Japan are compared. And, through the parison with the Great Dictionary of World’s Place Names Translations(世界地名翻译大辞典), the specification trends of overseas place names in the era of Korea opening and the modern time of Korea are examined. Also, specifications of loan words are classified into the transliteration(音譯), the meaning translation(意譯), the sound and meaning translation(音意兼譯) and the semi-sound and semi-meaning translation(半音半意譯) and the employment method of Chinese characters to Korean for the place names in INJIJEMYEONGPYO is analyzed. Books published in the era of Korea opening were mostly on introductions of international geographies and histories based on translations and no discussions were held to recognize and establish clear rules on specifications of overseasplace names so that specifications of place names used in Chinese and Japanese publications were directly adapted and used. Therefore, studies should be conducted to improve orthographies of loan words and to deliver clear meanings of place names. And, such discussions on the necessity of improved rules to accept loan words in the modern age would have the identical purpose to the record of ‘INJIJEMYEONGPYO’. In addition to the Chinese character orthography in this study, the Hangul orthography in the Korea opening era should be studied as well along with diachronic studies on orthographies of loan words specified in various documents published during that era.
