Various different standards are applied when cataloging Chinese materials in local libraries since there are no detailed rules regarding Chinese transcription. As a result, complete bibliographic control is not possible due to the limitations of the simplified Chinese transcription in KORMARC.
It is difficult to decide the form and selection of Chinese headings omitted in the headings section of the KCR 3rd. edition. In addition, in the Chinese headings of the headings section in the KCR 2nd. edition, defined transcription standards do not exist for the romanization or regulations concerning the Koreanization of Chinese geographic names since only regulations exist for transcriptions into Korean characters.
In addition, even in the Chinese transcription regulations arising from the Loan-Word Transcription regulation, it does not provide a method of usage, or a detailed introduction or explanation for PINYIN when transcribing Chinese into Korean, making it difficult for most lay persons to transcribe into Korean.
Furthermore, from the shortage of the number of Hanzi character code in the KS C 5601 character set within KS C 5601 supported by KORMARC has led to difficulty of Chinese transcription and incomplete descriptions of cataloging.
In order to address these issues, this study proposes an introductory plan for PINYIN transliteration in KORMARC and discusses the implications of the plan. The romananization in MARC, such as CNMARC, MARC21, JAPAN/MARC, HKMARC and the method of PINYIN transliteration were examined and used as reference to develop two main plans. The first is the PINYIN record structure of KORMAC in a multilingual environment, and second is the standardization plan of the PINYIN transcription in KORMARC.
The PINYIN record structure of KORMAC in the multilingual environment is examined as follows:
First, is the structure of PINYIN based transliteration in the 1XX field. Here, to overcome the shortage of Hanzi of KS character set using the PINYIN heading form of the 1XX main heading of the bibliographic record and the 1XX approached-heading of the authority record, the international bibliography exchange will take an intermediary role based on the international standard form of the approached-heading and main heading.
Second is to repeat every field. Without a new field definition for the transliteration field, the present field definition can still be used as well as maintaining the unity of the transliteration field and vernacular field, and facilitating the application of an additional field of a new transliteration scheme.
Third, ‘$8<link-number>?g?<transliteration scheme’ is used to link between the vernacular field and transliteration field. This will make it possible to link between chinese character field and Hangul field, and between PINYIN fields. Even with the addition of the transliteration scheme, each field of the transliteration scheme control will make the link possible despite any overlap n fields. In addition, a plan is presented to facilitate the addition of a vernacular field with only the usage of the transliteration scheme and subfield $8 in a multilingual environment.
Fourth, is the selection of the required PINYIN transliteration field. For the bibliographic consistency of CNMARC, the PINYIN transliteration from CNMARC should place the corresponding fields in the representative PINYIN transliteration field by mapping the KORMARC fields.
From KORMARC, 4 proposals are presented in this study related to the standardization of PINYIN transcription.
First, Hanyu Pinyin Zhengcifa Jiben Guize is introduced. This is a basic rule that is applied to the PINYIN transliteration in KORMARC.
Second, the rule related to personal names in the Hanyu Pinyin Zhengcifa Jiben Guize from the standardization of Chinese personal name transcription is observed. In 1974, although Zhongguo Renmin Hanyu PINYIN Zimu Pinxiefa was established, later rules developed after that time would take precedence in application.
Third, Zhongguo Diming Panyu PINYIN Zimu pinxie Guize(Hanyu Diming Bufen was introduced from the standardization of Chinese geographic name transcription.
Fourth, Zhongwen Shukan Mincheng hanyu pinyin pinxiefa was introduced from the standardization of Chinese publication name transcription.
Similarly, the presentation of the plan for the PINYIN transliteration of KORMARC is expected to provide a convenient information environment for librarians and users alike for the retrieval and list of Chinese materials.
