1960년 11월 ‘새벽’지를 통해서 세상에 나온 『광장』은 1996년 11월 문학과지성사판까지 36년 동안 일곱 번의 개작을 거치며 현시대의 광장에 새로운 모습으로 등장했다. 그 동안 『광장』에 관한 연구가 활발하게 이루어진 것은 자명한 일이지만 전반적인 개작 양상에 대한 검토는 이루어지지 않았다.
본 연구는 『광장』에 관한 전체적인 개작 양상을 살펴봄으로써 문학적 가치를 새롭게 조망해 보고자 했다. 초간본과 개작본 사이에 작가 의식이 관여한다는 원칙을 세우고, 그것을 토대로 판본을 비교 분석하여 작가가 지향하고자 하는 것이 무엇인지 알아보았다. 각 분석 요소에 따른 결과를 정리하면 다음과 같다.
첫째, 이명준은 철학적 사고를 지닌 소극적인 지식인에서 적극적이고 진보적인 휴머니스트로 탈바꿈한다. 이는 작가 의식이 주인공에 대한 집착과 인간애의 발현에 역점을 둔 까닭이다.
둘째, 이명준의 분신인 윤애와 은혜는 개작 전 이명준과 동등한 사랑의 관계를 형성하다가 개작이 거듭되면서 은혜를 향한 사랑으로 변화된다. 이러한 변화는 육체와 정신의 합일이 가능한 사랑을 추구하는 작가 의식에 기인한다.
셋째, 정향사판에서 새롭게 등장하는 ‘김’이라는 인물은 이명준과 대립적인 관계를 형성하고 새로운 사건을 발생시킨다. 두 인물의 갈등 구조는 소설의 흐름에 극적 재미를 더한다.
넷째, 윤애와 은혜를 상징하던 갈매기가 민음사판에 와서는 은혜와 그녀의 딸로 상징의 대상이 바뀐다. 개인적인 사랑에서 가족을 향한 사랑으로 작가의 변화된 의식을 엿볼 수 있다.
다섯째, 윤애와 은혜에 대한 사랑과 이데올로기에 의한 이명준의 죽음이 개작 후 자유를 향한 의식적인 죽음으로 그 의미가 변화된다. 이것은 사후세계에 대한 희망적인 작가 의식의 내포라고 할 수 있다.
여섯째, 사건의 진행에 따른 구성이 현재→과거→과거→현재에서 개작된 문학과지성사 전집판에서는 현재→과거→현재→과거로 바뀐다. 작가는 주인공 의식의 현재화를 실현시키고 과거보다 현재를 강조한다.
일곱째, 초간본에서 사용한 한자, 외래어, 일본식 발음 등을 개작하는 과정에서 고치거나 삭제한다. 토박이말을 구사하고 주어의 생략과 쉼표를 사용하며 계속해서 문체를 다듬는다. 이로써 작가는 작품에 견고한 외곽 틀을 형성하고 독자에게 좀 더 쉽게 다가갈 수 있도록 변화시킨다.
결과적으로 일곱 개의 요소들은 초간본을 바탕으로 개작되면서 많은 변화를 보여준다. 그 과정에서 작가는 하나의 문장에서부터 전체적인 양상까지 작품을 한 단계 승화시키고 참된 모습을 갖추기 위해 노력한다. 『광장』은 한 세기를 마무리하면서 기념비적인 이정표로서 작용하며 독자에게는 완성된 작품을 읽는 재미를 부여한다.

『Open Square』 that had come in to the world through the Saebyuk magazine in Nov. 1960 have appeared in Nov. 1996 as a new figure of the present times through the seven revise for 36 years until the Moonhak & Jisungsa edition. The study about 『Open Square』 has been proceeded actively until now, though that is self-evident; it was not general study about the appearance of revised editions.
Through the study about the appearance of revised editions, it does intend newly to take a view of the literary value about that. On the basis of the principle that author's spirits have involved between the original and revised editions, it is the study what author had intended to pursue through comparison and analysis about the revised works. Followings are contents of the studied results in accordance with the points of analysis.
The first, Myoung-joon has changed to active and progressive humanist from passive intellect with philosophical reason. This is reason why the author's spirits had placed great emphasis on expression of attachment and humanism for hero.
The second, Yun-ae and Un-hye as the other self of Myoung-joon maintained equivalent relation of lover, but it has been changed love for Un-hye through revise. This change is on the basis of the author's spirits that pursue love to be able to add platonic and physical.
The third, character 'Kim' who newly appeared in Junghyangsa edition make the confrontational relation with Myoung-joon and bring about new affairs. The trouble structure of two men has added to dramatic interest in flow of the work.
The fourth, the sea gull as object of symbolic is exchange from Yun-ae and Un-hye to Un-hye and her daughter in Minumsa edition. We can guess the changed spirits of the author's from personnel love to love for family.
The fifth, it has been changed the meaning from the death of Myoung-joon by love for Yun-ae & Un-hye and ideology to conscious death toward freedom after revise. This is regarded as connotation of hopeful the author's spirits after death.
The sixth, the constitution in accordance with the progress of the affairs changed from the present→the past→the past→the present to the present→the past→the present→the past in revised the Moonhak & Jisungsa complete works edition. The author has set the hero's spirits to the current aspect and has emphasized the present more than the past.
The last, Chinese character, a word of foreign origin, Japanese pronunciation etc. was deleted or amended through the progress being revised. He has applied the native tongue, the rest and the omission of the subject, and trimmed the literary style continuously. The author makes the solid exterior frame and reform to access easier by reader.
Finally seven main points show a lot of changes through the revise on the basis of original edition. Intention that is pursued by author in the course makes develop one step a work from a sentence to general appearance and it is in endeavor in order to possess truthful figure. Therefore 『Open Square』 acts as memorial milestone and gives the interest of reading the completed work to reader at the end of a century.
