본고에서는 영랑시 전체 작품을 대상으로 하여 그의 시 전반에 나타나 있는 시어의 특성을 구체적으로 고찰해보았다.
시어는 시의 미학적 총체인 작품구조에 영향을 주는 최소단위라 할 수 있고, 시어를 구분하여 그 특징을 분석하고 시어를 운용하는 용법을 살펴보는 일이야말로 영랑의 시를 이해하는 데 선행되어야할 기초적인 작업이므로 그의 시어에서 나타나는 특징들을 크게 조어, 의고체 시어, 전라도 방언, 한자와 외래어로 나누어 살펴보았다.
영랑은 새로운 조어를 개성적으로 구사하여 새로운 어감을 창조해냈고, 동일한 내용의 방어를 사용할 경우에도 가능한 한 발음상의 편의(suphony)를 살리고자 노력하였고, 순수·서정시에서 나타나는 음악성과 의미구조의 융합을 잘 드러내어 리듬감 있는 운율을 만들어 냈다.
영랑은 표준어와 방언 속에 남아 있는 고어의 쓰임새를 포함한 의고체 시어를 활용하였다. 그는 고풍스러운 느낌을 수는 순수한 우리말을 사용하여 전통적인 정감과 서정적인 정서를 표출하였다.
영랑은 그가 쌓아올린 고운 정서와 함께 한층 더 향토적 색채를 짙게 하기위해 전라도 특유의 사투리를 많이 사용하였다. 방언의 사용은 그의 뛰어난 기법으로 한층 더 빛이 났으며 훌륭한 시어로 탈바꿈하게 되었다. 이러한 방언의 도입은 새로운 언어감각을 발견함과 동시에 시어에 있어서 한국어의 확대 가능성을 열어 주었다.
한자의 사용에 있어서도 초기의 사행소곡에서는 그 사용을 자제하고 소수의 정련된 한자만을 사용하였고, 외래어 사용 또한 매우 절제되어 우리말을 주된 심상의 표현으로 삼았다는 것을 알 수 있었다.
이처럼 영랑은 다양한 조어의 방식을 통해 음악성을 극대화시켰고, 종래의 공식적이고 관습적인 표현 및 전형적인 상징을 부정하고 자신의 시 정신을 표현하기 위해 노력하였다. 또 전통적인 서정과 가락을 창조적으로 형상화하며 사라져가는 고유어를 발견해냈고, 방언을 도입하여 정감어린 향토색을 드러냈으며, 외래어의 사용을 자제하고 한글 시어를 지향함으로써 국어의 심미적 가치를 개발하는데 주력한 시인임을 알 수 있다.

This study was to analyze the features of the poetic words shown to his whole poetry by dividing all his eighty-six poetry in grammatical particles, poetic words of classicism, Cholla provincialism, Chinese characters, and borrowed words.
He created new feelings for words by using new grammatical particles individually. He tried to show euphony in case that he used the words of same contents, and he made meters of rhythmical sense by well showing the musicality shown to pure lyrics and showing the harmony of the meaning structures.
He expressed traditional emotions and lyric feelings by using poetic words of classicism that could give us archaic feelings.
He used Cholla provincialism to express strong local color. Introduction of dialects led to not only discovery of new linguistic sense, but possibility of Korean extentions in poetic words.
We could noticed that he used only a few Chinese characters in primary four-line stanza by restraining them, and he considered Korean as main expressions of images by restraining the using of borrowed words excessively.
Like above, he achieved maximum of musicality through diverse ways of grammatical particles, and he tried to express his own spirit of poetry against old official and traditional expressions. And we could find that he was the real poet who discovered vanished language of our own by shaping traditional lyricism and melody creatively, who showed emotional local color by introducing dialects, and who tried to develop the esthetical value of Korean by checking himself from using borrowed words and by pointing Korean poetic words.
