The vocabulary is defined as a set of word within limited linguistic experessions.Korean words can be grouped into four classes - native words ,Sino-Korean words,words of foreign origin and hybrid words. In this , I tried to explain the composition of Modern Korean vocabulary by statistical method,and to presuppose its form in the future.
In the chapter 1,I presented the purpose and method in this ,and summarized preceding surveys.
In the chapter 2,first,I gave a definition to the concept of vocabulary and mentioned counting unit. And next,I searched words of news and magazines and analyzed their frequency, distribution of the frequency, classification by the origin of words and frequent words. This survey showed some characteristics of Korean vocabulary.
1. Korean vocabulary contains many low-frequency words and small high frequency-words. Native words have a majority in frequent words.
2. In limited survey,frequent words are influenced by peculiar topics. Thus, the fundamentality of words can not be dicided by only the frequency.

In the chaper 3, I mentioned sampling survey which can decrease the influence of peculiar topics in frequent words. The multi-stage sampling method is fit for large scale survey,but its sampling unit must be made as small as possible.
In the chapter 4, I searched words of news of a week by the multi-stage sampling method. For calculating dispersion of words,I divided population into four stratums. The dispersion of word is calculated by standard dispersion which is computed by following formula.

(n = number of stratums, □ = arithmetic mean of each sample's proportion, Xi = proportion of each sample)
And I tried to calculate fundamentalities of the 189 most frequent words. The fundamentality function f = a / b log / c log sc is fitted by the least square method to sixteen sets of triads (which components are proportion,measure of dispersion and evaluation by native speaker.)
The table of fundamentalities shows that native words are more fundamental than Chinese loan words and words of foreign origin.
In chapter 5, I serveyed novels, poems, scenario of TV drama and sijos (a three verse of old Korean ade). The result of this serveyed attests that Sino-Korean words and words of foreign origin don't have an important effect in these fields. The difference of percentage in vocabulary composition between news, magazine and literary works must be influenced by character of each words.
Native words are vague and ambiguous, compared with Sino-Korean words and words of foreign origin. Sino-Korean words and words of foreign origin are used when native words are not enough to express minute concept. They are used when detailed character of those words disturb purpose of vague expression.
In chapter 6,I searched the vocabulary composition in the parts of speech. The result of survey shows that there are higher ratio nouns in news, sijos and headlines of magazine than in poems,novels and text of magazines.Thus,the proportion of nouns increase when sphere of expression is subject to restrictions. Summarized expressions are easy to be invaded by loan words,because nouns are susceptible to be invaded by loan words. In addition to the function of words,the sphere of expression has an important effect upon vocabulary composition.
In the conclusion, I tried to predict the vocabulary composition in the future. Small frequent native words are used evenly,but many Sino-Korean words and words of foreign origin are not. Though this tendency will remain unchanged in the future,Sino-Korean words will be replaced by words of foreign origin.It is caused by weakening of effect and ability which translate foreign words by Sino-Korean words. As it turns out,there is no chance that loan words will occupy Korean words. But it seems that the abolition of spelling and education of Chinese characters has an important effect in vocabulary composition.
