서로 다른 언어를 사용하는 나라와 국민들 사이에는 언어뿐만 아니라 생각이나 감정을 표현하는 방식이 서로 다르다. 이것은 언어가 단지 인간의 의사를 전달하는 매체이상의 의미를 가지고 있다는 것을 의미한다. 그러므로 언어는 그 나라의 문화적 요소와 밀접한 관계가 있다고 말할 수 있다.
따라서 한·미간에 문화적 차이를 이해하여야 하는 것이 중요하다는 관점에 입각하여 연구를 시도하였다. 각 언어가 가지고 사회 언어학적 배경과 그 언어를 사용하는 국민간의 사고유형이 다르면 그만큼 언어를 이해하는데는 어려움이 따르기 마련이다. 이것은 언어가 인간의 사고방식에 영향을 주며 인간사회의 환경적 요소나 문화적 요소가 각기 다른 언어에 영향을 주기 때문이다.
한국어를 영어로 표현하는데 있어 가장 큰 어려움은 서로 다른 문화권간의 문화적 특성에 따른 언어구조의 차이에서 찾을 수 있다. 이러한 것들을 극복하기 위하여 언어 사용 국민의 사고방식과 사고방식이 나타나는 유형분류를 에스키모와 몽골어의 예와 함께 미국영어와 한국어를 중심으로 분류하였다. 그리고 문화의 차이로 나타나는 미국영어의 관용적표현들과 문화고유어(random hole), 그리고 한 단어의 의미영역이 서로 다르게 세분화 되는 것을 통해 언어에 고유의 개별적 특성이 존재함을 알아보고자 하였다.
한편, 영어의 표현들에 있어 나타나게 되는 표현방식과 여러가지 상징적 표현방식과 속담, 격언등을 알아봄으로써 한국어와 영어의 차이점을 살펴보고, 외국어인 영어를 학습할 때 문화적 차이로 인하여 겪게 되는 학습자의 언어 학습단계를 살펴봄으로써 영어 학습자를 지도하는 교사들이 학생들을 지도할 때 이용할 수 있는 문화지도 방안을 알아보고자 하였다.
끝으로 언어란, 문법구조나 일차적 의미영역과 무관하게 사회, 문화적 요소와 깊이 관련되어 있어 한 언어를 명확하게 이해하기 위해서는 그 언어가 속해있는 문화를 이해하여야 한다는 점과 문화연구의 필요성을 강조하고자 한다.

In the country where people use different language, they differ from each other in expressing their thoughts and feeling.
Language is not just form of communication between men, but it has more profound meaning. Therefore, we could say language has close relationship with element of culture in its country. From this point of view, it is best to understand the difference in culture between Korean and Americal with different language backgrounds and it's people having different way of thinking, making language that much harder to understand. This is because language influence the way of thinking of men, its environment and culture, which affects the language in human society.
The biggest problem in translating Korean language into English is that they each have their own culture and backgrounds. In order to overcome this matter, I have evaluated the people and their language and have used Eskimo and Mongolian as my example to Korean and English. Also idiomatical and random hole that is different because of the culture difference, by doing so, have tried to find out a word that has different meaning due to traditional peculiatities.
Through English expression which has different meaning and different way of using it, we can find out the difference of korean language and English.
As for learning as foreagin language, I have tried to allow teachers who teach English to guide their students all the steps which learner must go through.
Last of all, I like to emphasis that language is not just created by grammar, but also by society, and its culture. In order to fully understand even one language, one must first understand the culture where the language belongs, making it necessity to research its culture.
