The current study has the main purpose on revealing the structural and linguistic features in text genre of statement of purpose through comparing the statement of purpose of Korean native speakers and Korean learners for letting Korean learners with academic purposes desiring to enter the domestic graduate schools write statement of purpose which is one of the enterance exam documents for graduate schools more easily and effectively. For that, the current study compares and analyzes the texts of the statement of academic plan from Korean native speakers, who are expected to form sentences in accordance with genres as a member of Korean native speakers community, and Korean learners with academic purposes, and finally finds similarities and differences between them. This might be used as materials for the basic education of academic writing classes in the future, and would help Korean learners with academic purposes write the of academic plan.
According to Korean Education Development Institute, the number of foreign learners studying Korean in Korea has rose and especially the number of Korean learners with academic purposes for the object of university(graduate school) admission has increased rapidly since the 2000s. Therefore, the necessity of studying preparations for the entrance exam documents such as a letter of self-introduction and a of academic plan which are necessary for the university(graduate school) admission looks high.
Thus, the current research examines the generic feature of texts targeting the of academic plan. The data analysis was drawn through collecting and analyzing 20 copies of the academic plan each, 40 copies in total of Korean native speakers and Korean learners with academic purposes who applied for graduate schools of Arts and Sciences of regular four-year colleges in Seoul. The analysis was conducted through revising and supplementing the analysis framework based on the analysis model for the statement of academic plan of Hsaio(2004) and Samraj & Monk(2008) targeting the of academic plan from people majoring the applied linguistics and linguistics to match the field of Korean education.
The following are the research topics of the current study. First, is there any difference in rhetorical structures and contents of the statements of academic plan between texts of Korean native speakers and of Korean learners with academic purposes? Second, are there any differences with respect to linguistic features in the text of the of academic plan?
The following is a result of comparing and analyzing the text of the of academic plan from two groups for solving the above research issues. First, the texts of the statements of academic plan from Korean native speakers and Korean learners with academic purposes are different in the rhetorical structures. The moves of move 1, 2, 3 in the text of Korean native speakers appear compulsory while that of Korean learners with academic purposes includes all the moves 1, 2, 3, 4 as the obligatory move. In addition, there is a tendency that Korean native speakers has certain patterns of the structure from moves whereas the structure from moves of Korean learners with academic purposes tends to vary through examining the move structures of two groups. Second, there were also differences of linguistic features having a matter of degrees through analyzing the complexity of texts, formulaic language, and the uses of academic vocabulary, technical vocabulary, and final endings. Korean native speakers turn out having the higher complexity of texts through confirmation that they use more syllables in sentence unit and syntactic words in addition to the simple comparison of quantitative factors. Also, the current study found the formulated expressions appearing frequently by steps of the moves in the text of Korean native speakers. Therefore, the present study indicates the arrangement of those formulated expressions appearing in the text of Korean native speakers who are the members of conversation community. The current study investigated the tendencies of using the academic vocabulary and academic vocabulary for researching the suitability of academic genre in the texts written by each of two groups, and Korean native speakers tends to have the higher generic stability because they utilize more various and academic vocabularies. Additionally, the present study figures out there is a perception gap about the text of the statement of academic plan between two groups verifying that the final endings in written language at the particular moves are used only in the text of Korean native speakers.
In conclusion, it is verified that there are differences between the texts of the statement of academic plan from Korean native speakers and Korean learners with academic purposes의 the of academic plan in structural and linguistic perspectives. Therefore, the structural and linguistic features of the of academic plan from Korean native speakers drawn by the present study would be practically used as the basic materials for the academic writing classes aiming at Korean learners with academic purposes. Also, it is expected that they would help Korean learners write the of academic plan as the guidelines for the statement of academic plan.
There are significances in the current study because the study tried to conduct the genre analysis study targeting the statement of academic plan which is one of the texts in academic writings for Korean learners with academic purposes, suggested the educational necessity of the texts from the of academic plan, and examined the linguistic property through the rhetorical structure and various factors of the texts.
