The main purpose of this study is to compare the performance of nonword repetition for monolingual and bilingual children. Nonword materials were divided into two types of word-likeness ( Korean vs. Mandarin ) including 2~6 syllables nonwords. A task consisted of a total of forty items ranging from two to six syllables in length, and eight for each of the five syllable lengths. Four of the eight items in each set are Mandarin-wordlike, and four are Korean-wordlike.
There were 40 children as participants, including 20 bilingual (Korean-Mandarin) and 20 Korean monolingual children. These participants were tested by the nonword repetition tasks of both Mandarin-wordlike and Korean-wordlike, Korean Receptive and Expressive Vocabulary Test(REVT)and Mandarin Peaboy Picture Vocabulary Test (PPVT-M).
To examine the differences in performance in Nonword repetition task between the two groups, Two-way mixed ANOVA were conducted. To analyze the correlation Pearson correlation were conducted.
The results showed that there was no significant difference between the two groups for the accuracy of nonword repetition tasks of Korean-wordlike, but there was significant difference between two groups for the accuracy of nonword repetition tasks of Mandarin-wordlike.
Both of the nonword repetition tasks of Mandarin-wordlike and Korean-wordlike, syllable length and the occurrence of syllable on the nonword repetition task significantly influenced the subject accuracy. When the syllable length increased, the repetition accuracy was reduced significantly. The repetition accuracy for high occurrence of syllable was significantly higher than that for low occurrence of syllable.
The accuracy of both of the nonword repetition tasks of Mandarin-wordlike and Korean-wordlike was significantly associated with the scores of the Korean-wordlike; Korean Receptive and Expressive Vocabulary Test (REVT) and Mandarin Peaboy Picture Vocabulary Test (PPVT-M). There were significant correlation among the accuracy of both of the nonword repetition tasks of Mandarin-wordlike and Korean-wordlike, the scores of the of Korean Receptive and Expressive Vocabulary Test (REVT) and Mandarin Peaboy Picture Vocabulary Test (PPVT-M).
