Nowadays, the number of Cambodians who desire to learn Korean is steadily increasing. Including students who study for scholarly attaintment, women who wish to form multi-cultural families, laborers who desire to have jobs in Korea or Korean companies in Cambodia, and teenagers who are interested in K-Drama and K-POP, lots of people in Cambodia feel the need to learn Korean. Therefore, differentiated and competitive learning strategies are required for Cambodian Korean language learners. One method of these strategies is learning through proverbs, which can be a very effective way of acquiring a new language.
A proverb is one form of a language that is closely related to the culture. And it is a mirror that reflects the culture of the country. In addition, learning a language is in fact learning the culture of the country, and the culture is formed under the influence of language. In other words, proverbs, culture and language are closely connected to one another and acquiring a language through proverbs is not only an effective way of learning the culture but also a more successful method of studying the language. Therefore, learning Korean through Korean proverbs is the effective approach to understand Korean culture and language easily and adapt to the life in Korea. The purpose of this research is to suggest the most efficient educational list of Korean proverbs for Cambodian Korean language learners in different levels.
The contents of each chapter are the followings. In chapter one, the purpose of the research is suggested, the previous studies are researched, and the method of the research is introduced.
In chapter two, some information about the relationships between language and culture, Korean language education and proverbs are stated for the theoretical background. In ‘language and culture’ part, the importance of culture in studying the second language and the influence of the cultural background information on learning a foreign language are discussed. In ‘Korean language education and proverbs’ section, the definition and features of proverbs are stated. And the educational Korean proverbs are stated by focusing on the educational value of proverbs and the proverbs education in different levels.
In chapter three, some proverbs from both countries are introduced. First, Korean educational proverbs are introduced in three aspects; Korean textbooks, Korean evaluation, and Korean proverbs experts & proverbs in publications. Next, some frequently used Cambodian proverbs are suggested since they would work as background information for Cambodian Korean language learners in real life situations. And these proverbs were selected from the questionnaires Cambodian citizens answered.
In chapter four, cultural similarities and differences of proverbs from both countries that are suggested in chapter three are analyzed. The analysis considered the aspect of vocabulary and the content characteristics. The proverbs are classified into seven categories including proverbs that are not related in vocabulary or content aspect; (1) animals (2) human (3) utterance (4) food, clothing and shelter (5) nature, weather (6) moral culture (7) state description. In each category, relevant proverbs from both countries are listed and similarities and differences are analyzed. The similar characteristics of the two countries’ proverbs are used in chapter five to select the list of Korean proverbs for different levels of learners.
In chapter five, the list of Korean proverbs for different levels of Cambodian learners is suggested, which most of the proverbs are discussed in chapter three, the current Korean proverbs. And the two aspects, (1) the difficulty levels of vocabulary and sentences, (2) the characteristics of Cambodia; similarities of two countries proverbs, Cambodian learners’ recognition degree about the proverbs, the opinions of the Koreans who experienced Cambodian culture are reflected. The proverbs are suggested step by step, considering the abilities of the learners. In this process, proverbs are distinguished into two parts; ‘essential proverbs’ that are required to study definitely and ‘selective proverbs’ that are less important ones comparatively and can be chosen according to the situation and the abilities of the learners.
The proverbs selected by this process would be expected to be more effective for the Cambodian learners than other people from different language groups because Cambodian characteristics are reflected. Hopefully, Cambodian Korean language learners would become more fluent in communication in Korean by using witty and polished style of speech, and understand the culture of Korea without any prejudice through this research.
