I think that the general public should be free from prejudice and existing exclusive thought. And it’s time to recognize multiple cultures and have citizenship coexisting with multicultural families. This study will suggest enhancement methods of right multicultural consciousness that keep up with globalization era after surveying multicultural consciousness of students who will lead future.
It’s time to have mutual understanding and consideration with citizenship going along the stream of times. I hope that the general public can coexist with one another successfully based on diversity and catholicity notwithstanding cultural differences and have a strong international competitiveness by fostering multicultural awareness. In these social environments, multicultural students can recover confidence and grow as global talents healthily with positive school life.
Multicultural consciousness is “to understand diverse culture breaking from the existing racial superiority, to have discernment recognizing diversity and to realize social integration solving conflicts with catholicity and communication.”
Thus, I will research multicultural awareness of students who will lead future and enhancement methods of multicultural awareness for realizing successful multicultural society will also be suggested in this thesis.
To survey multicultural awareness, 382 questionnaires(191 multicultural students, 191 general students) were distributed to 8 multicultural model schools in Daejon. 363 questionnaires(179 multicultural students, 184 general students) were returned as 95.0% rate. The result analyzed from this survey was represented as the survey population’s medium values with 5-point Likert scale.
First, multicultural consciousness of students are 3.74 points in the cognitive aspect, 4.27 points in the emotional aspect and 4.20 points in the behavioral aspect. And the average is 4.05 points. This is above average and corresponds to the level of 81 out of 100 points, but multicultural consciousness of students should be improved a little more.
Second, multicultural consciousness of the general students are 3.86 points in the cognitive aspect, 4.30 points in the emotional aspect and 4.24 points in the behavioral aspect. And the average is 4.11 points. However, multicultural consciousness of the multicultural students are 3.62 points in the cognitive aspect, 4.23 points in the emotional aspect and 4.16 points in the behavioral aspect. The average is 3.98 points and this is 0.13 points less than the general students. Multicultural consciousness is seemed to be lower because multicultural students are more exposed to prejudice and discrimination rather than general students.
Third, general students choose the number of multicultural education, multicultural friends, family economical status, parents’ job and so on as factors affecting students’ multicultural consciousness. And multicultural students choose Korean conversation skills, family economical status, parents’ job and so on.
Fourth, multicultural consciousness of foreign-born multicultural students was expected multicultural consciousness to increase in proportion to period of living in Korea but was lowered or similar. This should be carefully investigated. as a matter of fact, foreign-born 69 students(39%) out of multicultural 179 students are relatively small number to consider as total opinion. However, persistent prejudice and discrimination could increase dissatisfaction and the dissatisfaction should be solved immediately.

Through this survey, it is appeared that factors affecting students’ multicultural consciousness are multicultural education, multicultural experience, family economical status, parents’ concern, school record, Korean conversation skills and so on. Among them, multicultural education is the most important factor.
Based on this survey, a few enhancement methods of multicultural consciousness will be suggested.
First, it is necessary to improve multicultural understanding. Multicultural education should be provided to all the people of country as well as multicultural families. Especially, understanding and awareness of teachers who are responsible for multicultural education are the most important. And education support system should be prepared for all the people of country to improve multicultral understanding.
Second, it is necessary to enhance multicultural consciousness. We should try to make friends with multicultural students and to increase opportunity of multicultural experience because experience of diverse cultures makes people respect multiple culture. If government departments and agencies continuously develop multicultural experience programs by using multicultural students’parents, it is helpful to improve multicultural consciousness. It will be also good to have community activities between general students and multicultural students and this will make opportunity of multicultural experience increase.
Third, concern and support to multiple culture are required. It is revealed that the better school record is, the higher learning ability is. Therefore, lacking learning ability of multicultural students should be increased and their talents should be also developed early. This make them important people of future generation. Furthermore, multicultural students should be supported to have good friendship with general students in active school life because Korean conversation skill is important factor of multicultural consciousness. Children education support program should be provided to parents of multicultural students because they are lack of communication with their children, learning and educational guidance information. Operation of counseling center that can advise and listen intently to multicultural students and parents is also necessary.
Eventually, increased understanding about multiple culture make people have correct multicultural recognition. And effort to enhance multicultural consciousness make people respect multiple culture. If multicultural conflicts are removed in an effort to increase multicultural concern and support, multicultural society will be successfully achieved.
