Nowadays the numbers of multi-cultural families are increasing remarkably. We should provide well organized institutional support to them in order for them to be assimilated and settled in Korean society without any problem. This is because if not, it may be emerging as a factor causing social problem.
The main subject of this study is on how to educate Korean language to the children of married women immigrants. And the study is mainly focused on the methods of Korean language education especially during the infant language acquisition time which is the most difficult period for the married women immigrants.
The age up to 36 months is considered the most important time because it is closely related with the brain developmental stage in the children education. To the most of married women immigrants who are facing a lot of various difficult obstacles to overcome, their children education is one of the difficulties to the women immigrants who are not used in speaking and understanding Korean language and the surroundings are not favorable to them.
In chapter 2, the following theoretical backgrounds are reviewed because those are necessary areas for study about infant’s language acquisition time.
And in chapter 3, the practices and problems of home visiting education are reviewed.
Currently the government has been conducting the home visiting education for marriage immigrants by the Multicultural Family Support Center for the period of 10 months. The Korean language instructor is carrying out the face-to-face education for two hours twice a week with Korean language text books(Korean books, 1, 2, 3 & 4 published in 2010 by National Korean Language Institute. The analysis of existing text books revealed that the contents of children language education is not sufficient.
The interview with the visiting instructors and married women immigrants are carried out. The questionnaires to the language instructors are as follows;
1) Motive about how they started to work as Korean language instructor
2) Carrier in Korean language education
3) Any problem and improvement in Korean language education
4) Any other role beside language education
5) Level of language education
6) Period of completing the language education level 1 & 2
7) Methods about how they are providing the language education
8) What of speaking, hearing, understanding and writing in learning
Korean language married women immigrants mostly feel difficult to master
9) Pro or con about educating married women immigrants and their children together
10) Any recommendation about Korean language education
According to the above questionnaires and answers taken from some Korean language instructors, some of the premises are presented for married women immigrants having poor home environment to educate their children better to ensure no failure of an important infant language acquisition in Korean society by making good support of the government.
First, the expertise of home visiting Korean language instructors should be considered and they should be better treated.
Second, as a qualification of visiting education recipient, a restriction is that the person should be an intermediate learner who finished the beginner course of Korean language text book and passed the intermediate Test of Proficiency in Korean (TOPIK) at minimum.
Third, the support of their families including husband and grandparents as well as a great concern of married women immigrants themselves for education of their children should be prerequisite.
Fourth, in order to minimize the stop-over, the sufficient education period should be given. It is real that the period of 10 months is not sufficient to have the marriage immigrant’s children educated properly in Korean language. Accordingly it is proposed that the relevant policies and family guidance systems be operated more flexibly.
Fifth, it is necessary to provide step-by-step teaching materials in addition to the basic materials for the children education.
Finally, it is proposed that the cultivating system Korean language visiting instructor should be considered and they should be better treated.
As a result of previous research review, it is the significance of this for the language learning to be going well in elementary linkage as a comprehensive language approach to language learning techniques including all parts of listening, reading, speaking and writing.
Lastly the limitation of this is that this study does not verify the effects of such educational and that it is proposed only as a educational teaching model design. Also it is regrettable that in-depth interview does not covers throughout the country. This study is finished expecting a follow-up study further to complete.
