The purpose of this research is to suggest some reasonable loan word
teaching strategies for North Korean refugees living in South Korea. The
refugees were surveyed in order to evaluate their ability to adapt loan
words. Loan word knowledge tests were administered in order to estimate
their loan word vocabulary. Using SPSS 21 software, I analyzed the
possible correlation between refugee loan word knowledge and variables
such as gender, age, duration of stay, and life satisfaction in South Korea.
The academic achievement and the effectiveness of sustaining short-term or
long-term retentive ability and rote memorization with several demonstrated
educational strategies such as a vocabulary learning strategy, a strategy of
studying word with a pictorial representation of its meaning and
consolidation strategies are shown with the individual variables which I
investigated. Also, I suggest more effective learning strategies for the
particular groups of investigators. New effective learning strategies and
some practical examples of textbooks and academic materials are suggested reflecting the study results.
Several preliminary questions are needed in order to study loan words
more effectively and more in detail. First, how well do North Korean
refugees adapt to South Korea loan words? Second, what is the correlation
between the loan word knowledge and individual variables of North Korean
refugees? Third, what is the most effective loan word vocabulary learning
strategy for North Korean refugees? Fourth, what is the correlation between
loan word proficiency and individual variables of North Korean refugees?
Last, what are the most productive and practical loan word learning
strategies for North Korean refugees?
This study examined vocabulary knowledge of loan words and
investigated the possible correlation between loan word knowledge and
individual variables. The study recruited 17 South Koreans and 57 North
Korean refugees and conducted a loan word adaptation survey. A
vocabulary test was also given to evaluate refugee loan word knowledge.
The study found a significant correlation between refugee accuracy rate and
their degree of life satisfaction in South Korea. However, no correlation was
found with gender, age, and duration of stay in South Korea. Also, the
more important words are, the higher accuracy rate they showed with
significance.
This study investigated the effect of vocabulary learning strategies on the
loan word acquisition of refugees. The study employed three strategies:
connecting associational words, using new words in sentences and studying
words with pictorial representations of their meanings with rote
memorization and retentive ability as control variables. Twenty-one refugees
were tested who studied new loan words using these strategies. The
immediate test and follow-up test were conducted to evaluate the effect of
each strategy. It appears that studying vocabulary with these strategies was
helpful and that a self-directed workbook of loan words was necessary. The
most effective loan word vocabulary strategies were connecting associational words from the immediate test and using new words in sentences. Learning
was found to be more effective in a high-level youth group community.
Variables such as gender, age, and satisfaction with living in South Korea
were more highly correlated than duration of stay. North Korean duration of
stay in South Korea had little effect on their learning loan words. Most of
the North Korean refugees who took part in these investigations insist that
it is more effective to learn loan words through the several strategies.
Specifically, they recommended the strategies of connecting associational
words and of using new words in sentences as the most effective strategies
for loan-learning textbooks.
There are three practical strategies suggested by the two surveys of
North Korean refugees. First, it is essential that we take into account not
only the general factors like gender, age, duration of stay but also factors
like life satisfaction in South Korea for more effective and practical loan
word education. Second, more practical loan-learning textbooks are needed
which take into account cultural factors and the special situations of
refugees. Third, it is necessary for the local society and government to
develop loan-word adaptation programs to help North Korean refugees adapt
to their South Korean environment.
There are three significant reasons why this study is meaningful and
important. First, it advances knowledge from the previous studies on the
correlation between loan word knowledge of North Korean refugees and
individual variables. Second, the general factors of gender, age and
satisfaction with living in South Korea were shown to be are highly
correlated with the ability of learning loan words for North Korean
refugees. Previous studies focused on North Korean refugees’ duration of
stay as a critical factor in improving their loan word learning ability. Third,
this study suggests practical learning strategies and strongly emphasizes the
necessity of developing the appropriate and practical loan-learning textbooks
which would include new suggested strategies. Although there are several important advances in this study from previous studies, it is difficultly to
generalize these results because the investigated sample size was small and
the distribution of individual variables such as age and residence was not
homogeneous. It was also hard to control the test processes of several
learning strategies with North Korean refugees.
