While researching this topic, the author analyzed not only the external aspects of the illustrations in each textbook, examining the content of each illustration to see whether there are social and/or cultural biases present, but also presented a reform bill based on the results. The research involved comparing and analyzing the differences between teaching materials found in Korean textbooks published in Korea, and those found in Korean textbooks published in Japan, exploring the characteristics of each, and presenting a plan for creating ideal illustrations of Korean teaching materials in both countries. Hopefully, the conclusions stated within will improve the development of future teaching materials being published both in Korea and Japan.
The first chapter clarifies the purpose of research in this thesis, and outlines prior research related to the textbook illustrations. Based on the initial research, the author proposes further examination of illustrations in Korean teaching materials, and introduces the questions addressed in the thesis. These questions seek to define the general characteristics of illustrations in Korean teaching materials. Next, the author explores the thoughts Korean teachers and students have about the illustrations found in Korean textbooks.
In the second chapter, in order to answer the main questions of the thesis, the author describes the role and function of illustrations in education, defines the “expression patterns,” and outlines pertinent background theory.
The third chapter outlines the process and the object of this research, describing the basis and process of data analysis. The research group includes a total of fourteen books: the seven books of Korean primary teaching materials published in Korea, and the seven books of Korean primary teaching materials published in Japan. The investigation involved twenty people who have experience teaching in Korean educational institutions as well as twenty people who study Korean.
The fourth chapter explains the results of the analysis of Korean teaching material illustrations based on the data presented in chapter three. Of the expression types appearing in the teaching materials, the comical expression is the most used. Interestingly, each textbook emphasizes a particular style of expression, preferring to use that style repeatedly instead of using different styles within a single textbook. In the majority of textbooks, it was found that there is a higher ratio of men as opposed to women in illustrations; and regarding ethnic demographics, blacks are the least represented. Significantly, students prefer to gather information from illustrations as opposed to from text, and teachers also find illustrations helpful when teaching Korean because of their accessibility for students; as a result, many teachers emphasize illustrations when it comes to selecting textbooks.
The thesis reaches its conclusion in chapter five, after discussing the significance and the limitation of the present research. Considering the results of this research, it is ideal to consult illustrators who understand the ideas found in Korean education and culture, and who can express those ideas in their illustrations of teaching materials. Otherwise, developers of teaching material, who have sufficient knowledge of Korean education and culture, must be able to precisely communicate that knowledge with the illustrator of the project. The author suggests that, while developing new textbooks, attention be paid not only to the structure and content of the teaching material but also to the illustrations. However, the proceeding analysis is limited to only the first chapters of the textbooks found in the research group. Therefore, there must be further research into illustrations of Korean teaching materials in the future. This thesis aims to instigate active development of new textbooks based upon the findings of the research and analysis contained within.
