The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship among father's participation in child-rearing, couple's harmony and mother-child interaction and then look into the mediating effect of couple's harmony for the influence of father's participation in child-rearing upon mother-child interaction. For this, study questions were established as follows:
Study question 1. 'What is the influence of father's participation in child-rearing upon mother-child interaction?'
Study question 2. 'What is the influence of couple's harmony upon mother-child interaction?'
Study question 3. 'What is the influence of father's participation in child-rearing and couple's harmony upon mother-child interaction?'
Study question 4. 'What is the mediating effect of couple's harmony upon the relationship between father's participation in child-rearing and mother-child interaction?'
Study subjects were parents who had children in their 1~5 years of age attending edu-care centers and kindergartens in Seoul and Gyeonggi areas, with their consent.
In order to test father's participation in child-rearing, Jo Suk-in (2010)'s test tool of father's participation in child-rearing, which was based on Choe Gyeong-sun (1992) and modified its vocabularies in order for fathers of young children could involve in the test from the aspect of vocabularies and contents, was used. In order to test mother-child interaction, this study partially used 27 items of cognitive, effort and influential factors, contained in Lee Eun-jin (2005)'s test tool of mother-child interaction, of which validity was tested with the test tool of mother-child interaction, developed by Hetherington & Clingempeel (1992), by adapting it for domestic situations. In addition, in order to test couple's harmony, the test tool of Lee Jin-a & Kim Seong-hi (2010) that could measure the degree of individual's harmony, namely an internal best state, and of couple's harmony, namely a best state of spouses, was used. In order to examine the correlation among father's participation in child-rearing, mother-child interaction and couple's harmony, Pearson product moment correlation analysis was carried out. In order to look into the influence of variables of father's participation in child-rearing and couple's harmony upon mother-child interaction, multiple regression analysis was carried out. In order to test the mediating effect, Sobel test of which mediating variable was couple's harmony was carried out. And the level of the minimal significance for test was established at p<.05.
Study findings are as follows:
First, all the variables of father's participation in child-rearing, mother-child interaction and couple's harmony had significant correlations among them. As for the influence of father's participation in child-rearing and couple's harmony upon the total score of mother-child interaction, father's participation in child-rearing and couple's harmony had significant influence upon the total score of mother-child interaction. Among them, significant variables were home making activity factor, cognitive achievement factor, behavioral factor and practice factor.
As for the influence of father's participation in child-rearing and couple's harmony upon cognitive factor, a sub-variable of mother-child interaction, father's participation in child-rearing and couple's harmony had significant influence upon cognitive factor, a sub-variable of mother-child interaction. Among them, home making activity factor, cognitive achievement factor, behavioral factor and practice factor had significant influence.
As for the influence of father's participation in child-rearing and couple's harmony upon effort factor, a sub-variable of mother-child interaction, father's participation in child-rearing and couple's harmony had significant influence upon effort factor, a sub-variable of mother-child interaction. Among them, home making activity factor, cognitive achievement factor, cognitive factor and practice factor had significant influence.
Finally, as for the influence of father's participation in child-rearing and couple's harmony upon influential factor, a sub-variable of mother-child interaction, father's participation in child-rearing and couple's harmony had significant influence upon influential factor, a sub-variable of mother-child interaction. Among them, cognitive achievement factor, cognitive factor, behavioral factor and practice factor had significant influence. In other words, father's participation had significant influence upon mother-child interaction; couple's harmony, upon mother-child interaction; and father's participation in child-rearing and couple's harmony, upon mother-child interaction.
Second, as for the mediating effect of couple's harmony for the influence of father's participation in child-rearing upon mother-child interaction, father's participation in child-rearing and couple's harmony had significant influence upon mother-child interaction. As above, father's participation in child-rearing had very high influence upon mother-child interaction, whereas couple's harmony also had very high influence upon mother-child interaction. Therefore, the explanatory power of father's participation in child-rearing for mother-child interaction seemed to become more significant by couple's harmony.
In conclusion, study findings show that father's participation in child-rearing, mother-child interaction and couple's harmony were correlated, and the influence of father's participation in child-rearing upon mother-child interaction increased by the mediating effect of couple's harmony. Based on this finding, the positive effect of high-quality mother-child interaction could be heightened by father's participation in child-rearing as well as by couple's harmony. The author hopes study findings will be used as related data to develop and support family programs that are associated to the research on the increase of father's participation in child-rearing and the awareness of importance of couple's harmony within a family, as a part of improving family relationship.
