This study is a genre analysis which explores the influence of various situational contexts on E-mails written in Korean. Three different types of situational context were given to examine how e-mail texts affect on different level of situational formality and relationship between sender and recipient. oth Korean Native Speakers(KNS) and Intermediate Korean Learners with Cambodian background(CKL) were asked to write e-mails in Korean. These e-mails were analyzed based on using qualitative method text structure aspect and linguistic style.
The findings are as follows:
Firstly, genre characteristics depend on various situations. It shows that text structure are formed most strictly when the situation are put in higher formality and bigger relational gap between sender and recipient. Polite and conventional expressions and chinese characters were frequently found at the same situation. The e-mails written by KNS reflect each different situational context with aspect of structure and linguistic style.
Secondly, learners seem to have difficulty with structuring when it comes to high formality situation. There wasn't significant difference found from e-mail texts in the low formality situation. But when it is reversed, text structure found CKL's e-mail showed considerable differences from KNS. Most of CKS finished e-mails writing without proper closing.
Lastly, CKL haven't fully understood to express linguistic style according to formal level set in the situation. Even the high-level learners didn't know how to use idiomatic expressions or chinese characters which show high level of formality. Meanwhile, in a low formal context, CKL couldn't use various endings which make style of the text more dynamic and informal.
The result of present study has considerable implications for Korean language field.
Firstly, it proves that it is important to provide various situational context for learners in the field. Teachers or textbooks should provide various contexts contains not only social distance but also diverse situation and its formality so that students can practice appropriate linguistic choices.
Secondly, the characteristics found in an e-mails could be used as basic data for Korean textbook especially in e-mail genre. Learners have difficulties in a high level of formality. The structure showed dramatic differences with KNS. Therefore these result ought to be applied to Korean textbook. Explicit information on text structure and linguistic style which analyzed in this study can be objective data for the Korean language field in regard of e-mail genre.
