The purpose of this study is to analyze the patterns of English translation of Korean serial verbs. For this, 150 serial verb sentences from Shin Kyung-sook's Korean novel, 『 Please Look After Mother』, were used to study how to translate Korea into English in the translation. In expectation of an influence of the properties of two verbs(V1, V2), Korean serial verbs were divided into three types: ‘Compound verbs’, ‘Auxiliary verbs’, and ‘Conjunctive verbs’.
As a whole, there were three translation patterns: ‘translating only one verb’, ‘translating all of two’, and ‘using the third expression’. Among them, ‘translating only one verb’ was the most frequent pattern. In addition, when three types of Korean serial verbs were considered, ‘Compound verbs’ and ‘Auxiliary verbs’ were translated using the ‘translating only one verb’ pattern the most. On the other hand, ‘Conjunctive verbs’ required ‘translating all of two’ the most because it seems that two verbs of that type have independent meanings respectively in the serial verb.
Moreover, these three patterns could be subdivided according to the form and features of translation. First, ‘translating only one verb’ was classified into three subtypes: ‘translating into a verb’, ‘paraphrasing’, and ‘translating into an adverb’. Second, ‘translating all of two’ was subdivided into five subtypes: ‘translating into two verbs’, ‘translating one verb into an adverb or a preposition’, ‘paraphrasing one verb’, ‘expressing the meaning of an auxiliary verb’, and ‘using a prefix’. Third, ‘using the third expression’ was divided into three subpatterns: ‘using the third verb’, ‘paraphrasing’, and ‘changing a part of speech’. Furthermore, when three types of Korean serial verbs were considered, unique subpatterns, which the other types didn't have, were found in each type of Korean serial verb.
