In this research, shadowing study was implemented as a method to promote study-purpose Korean learners’ speaking ability fast and efficiently for their college classes and campus life. The target group was composed of 8 foreigners from Russia, Japan, China, Cambodia, Hong Kong who studied Korean at least for one and half year and finished high level Korean course at colleges in capital areas in Korea.
To find out factors influence to improving Korean speaking ability of study-purpose Korean learners, pre/post-speaking tests were recorded and analyzed by Korean lecturers. The standard of test grade was composed of pronunciation and intonation, vocabulary and grammar, content, task performing ability, and mutual interaction. Also, changes of attitude and reaction after shadowing study was investigated through pre/post/in-depth survey. The findings are as follow:
First, as a result of finding influencing factors to general Korean speaking ability, the grade after shadowing study was dramatically increased. It was revealed that the learners recognized differences through speaking practice by themselves without a special lecture on pronunciation and it was shown that their pronunciation can be improved as good as native Koreans through practice.
Second, attitude and reaction to shadowing study was examined. The 8 Korean learners said that shadowing study was helpful for being encouraged and increasing their interest in Korean thus resulting in improving their speaking as well as listening and reading. With the results mentioned above, it is expected that shadowing text books or other material can be used in class. In addition, if there is a recorded material included in a basic textbook, shadowing through listening the recorded material is expected to improve study-purpose Korean learners’ speaking and listening ability.
