The purpose of this thesis is to study the contents and the methodology of Korean collocation education for foreigners. The importance of knowledge of collocations for them has been widely recognized. However, very few empirical studies have been made on the issue of how to teach them effectively in a Korean language classroom. In this regard, this study focuses on selecting collocations, setting up contents of collocation education and suggesting effective methods of collocation education.
In chapter 2, we define lexical collocation for teaching Korean language and limit the scope of the study.
In chapter 3, we suggest several principles to teach collocation effectively. First, teach collocations just like a teaching method for vocabularies. Second, teach collocations from beginner. Third, teach collocations centered on subject. We argue that collocation education centered on subject can help learners to memorize collocations systematically and to use the memorized collocations easily in real situations.
In chapter 4, we discuss collocation lists and design contents. It is suggested that collocation lists are based on the data 'Korean educational vocabulary for foreigners' and 'Korean collocation dictionary for learners'. And classifying the collocations is based on subjects and levels. Subjects are determined based on Korean textbooks. Collocations are divided into three levels; low level, intermediate level, advanced level. And then, contents of Korean collocation Education are designed by each subject. The contents of collocation are based on situation, function and semantic relation.
In chapter 5, we suggest methodology how to teach collocations; 5 steps of Warm up - Presentation - Practice - Use - Follow up. We also suggest various classroom activities for teaching Korean collocations. Activities for each step are expected to improve learner's vocabulary ability.
In chapter 6, we summarize this study and point out future research for Korean collocation education.
