The purpose of this was to examine intonation types of final endings which function pragmatic function in Korean and to search for intonation education method for Korean learner. There is a need to educate Korean intonation depending on a language area for efficiency, so this study restricted the experimenter to Chinese learners who commit considerable intonation errors affected by their mother language which is tone language. The study examines Koreans' Korean intonation and Chinese learners' Korean intonation on the basis of experimental phonetical method.
Chapter 1 brought up necessity of intonation education through suggesting reason and purpose of intonation education for supra-segmental phoneme. Since intonation is mostly affected by mother language, intonation education based on language area is effective. Therefore, the test object for the study was chosen as Chinese learner who are majority of Korean language learner and affected by their mother language, tone language. I explored a method to supplement the previous studies about pragmatic functions after I examined two types of precedent study which are a study for intonation types targeting at Chinese learners and that for intonation education plan.
Chapter 2 suggested definition of intonation and function, defined the concept of pragmatic function and proposed system and types of intonation especially corresponds to this study. To suggest final ending lists which are relevant to pragmatic function of intonation the study proposed 20 final ending lists of pragmatic function from Korean teaching material and actual everyday language.
Chapter 3 suggested study method. Prior to this examination, the study held preparatory exam and look into validity of examination tool and appropriacy of examination sentence. Problem was supplemented after the preparatory exam and proceeded actual exam with the intonation analysis of 2,924 sentences among 6,188 sentences. Also, validity was granted through explaining Praat program which was used as exam tool and examination standard.
On Chapter 4, the study compared and analyzed intonation types of final endings between Korean speaker and Chinese learner. Analysis result showed that Chinese learners usually articulate falling tone for declarative final endings and rising tone for interrogative final endings since they are affected by their mother language. Especially the study focused on ‘-구나/-군(요)’, ‘-는데(요)’, ‘-다’, ‘-(으)ㄹ걸(요)’ which experimenters had difficulties for articulating. Korean speaker uttered ‘-구나/-군(요)’ as LHL% for〔admiration〕and〔confirmation〕, H% for〔sarcasm〕. On the otherhand, Chinese learner uttered the〔admiration〕 as L%,〔confirmation〕as LHL%, and〔sarcasm〕as L%, showed different intonation in〔admiration〕and〔sarcasm〕. Korean speaker uttered the final ending ‘-는데(요)’ as LH% for〔admiration〕and〔expectation〕, L% for〔concern〕, however Chinese learners uttered as L% in all meanings. For the final ending ‘-다’, Korean speaker uttered as L% for〔wonder〕and H% for〔boast〕. Whereas Chinese learner uttered as L% in all meanings, appeared different from Korean. Korean speaker uttered ‘-(으)ㄹ걸(요)’ as LH% for〔assumption〕, L% for〔sorry〕and〔regret〕while Chinese learner uttered as L% in all meanings showing no difference in intonation between the meanings. This presented mother language influence and lack of Korean intonation education. Thus the suggested imitation step, intonation expressing step, meaning distinction step, and practice step as a intonation education steps.
This study may contains importance as below. First, this study accomplished more specific examination of intonation by analyzing final endings in terms of situational pragmatic functions instead of depending on the mood, the previous grammatical function. Second, the study provided visual suggestion based on experimental phonetic method through recording intonation of actual Korean speaker and Chinese learner. Third, the study analyzed the aspects of pragmatic function final ending's intonation from Korean teaching material and through suggesting representative intonation the study made a starting point of typological approach to intonation based on function. This could be used as a practical education teaching material.
