Mothers in multicultural family become a member of Korean society unfamiliar to them through international marriage and are to face a wide range of complex problems such as communication problem, social and cultural adaptation, economic problem, and conflicts in worldview in a new life environment. What is more, they are to have the burden and stress of parenting. In Korean society where child-centered education is preferred, mothers in multicultural family are to be confused about their role as mothers losing confidence. Such a stress and sense of efficacy in relation to parenting have impacts upon children through mothers’ parenting behavior. Aiming to account for parenting behavior of mothers in multicultural family, this study examines what differences there are between parenting stress, parenting efficacyand parenting behavior of mothers in multicultural family and their demographic and sociological characters and what impact their parenting stress, parenting efficacy can have on their parenting behavior.
The subject of investigation was 114 mothers in multicultural family who live in Seoul and Kyungki do and the data was collected with the use of questionnaire. For the research tool, general sociological questions on mothers in multicultural family as well as three tools such as parenting stress (PSI/SF), parenting efficacy (PSOC) and parenting behavior (IPBI) were used. For the analysis of research question, average, standard deviation, frequency (N), percent (%) were calculated and O WAY ANOVA analysis and t-test were conducted with the use of a statistics package, SPSS/WIN Ver. 15.0. Besides, the impact of parenting stress and parenting efficacy on parenting behavior was examined through multiple regression analysis.
The outcome of the investigation shows the following. First, regarding the ‘children’s nature’ amongst parenting stress of mothers in multicultural family, there was a meaningful difference in their nationality, education, Korean language skill, and the number of children they have. Regarding the ‘children relationship’, there was a meaningful difference in their nationality, whether they are employed or not, and age. As to the ‘study expectation stress’, there was a meaningful difference in their Korean language skills. Second, regarding the ‘sense of parent efficacy’, among parenting efficacy of mothers in multicultural family, there was a meaningful difference in their nationality, age while regarding the ‘sense of parent’s anxiety there was a meaningful difference in Korean language skill. As to the ‘parent’s role and interest’ there was a meaningful difference in their education. Third, regarding the ‘rational guide’ amongst parenting behavior of mothers in multicultural family, there was a meaningful difference in their nationality, whether they are employed or not, and age. Regarding the ‘limitation’ amongst parenting behavior, there was a meaningful difference in whether they are employed or not, Korean language skill, and the number of children. And as to the ‘affection’ amongst parenting behavior, there was a meaningful difference in their nationality, whether they are employed or not, Korean language skill, and age. As to the ‘responsiveness’ amongst parenting behavior, there was a meaningful difference in their nationality, whether they are employed or not, the number of children, and age. Fourth, the outcome of the examination about the impact of their parenting stress and parenting efficacy on parenting behavior is as follows. It was observed that the ‘children relationship stress’ and ‘sense of parent’s efficacy’ can account for the ‘rational guide’, while the ‘sense of parent’s efficacy’ and ‘parent’s anxiety’can account for the ‘limitation’. It was observed that the ‘sense of parent’s efficacy’, ‘children relationship stress’, ‘study expectation stress’ can account for the ‘affection’ and that only one factor, the ‘children relationship stress’ has a meaningful association with the ‘responsiveness’.
This study aims to illuminate the impact of parenting stress, parenting efficacy of mothers in multicultural family on their parenting behavior when they are to raise their children in foreign environment. Presenting the basic data helpful to understand the tension and difficulty (parenting stress) of mothers in multicultural family when they raise their children, expectation and confidence for parenting (parenting efficacy) and parenting behavior, and being the material for helping positive parenting by them, the study intends to contribute to happy life of multicultural family, which is increasing in Korean society by suggesting the practical guide to lessen their parenting burden.
