Proverbs definitely show what means it in a short sentence, include the culture, history, customs and ideology of the nation and consist of figurative expression to easily understand in a simple form. So, they are greatly effective to communicate the meaning of words or circumstances and have been used widely in daily life with a sharp satire and teaching. This study tries to suggest several methods to use proverbs in the Korean language education through a part of Korean culture. Proverbs symbols a ‘nationality’ as the implicative words including the appearance, emotion, teachings and satires of life, as well as the old history of the society which has used a language. If they will be used in the Korean language education, so, it will be very helpful for understanding even Korean emotion included into the Korean language as well as the skills of Korean language.
Chapter Ⅰ of this study examined the history of the Korean language education and understood the importance of proverbs and the purpose of proverb education as the educational factor for the Korean language. Proverbs may be greatly effective for learning of language education because they have the culture of the nation. Actually, proverb is not educated well in the Korean language education and there are little studies on educational proverbs. But, they have been studied so much in the education of Korean native language. However, the proverb education in the Korean language education should have other approaches in the different views from the education of Korean native language. The purpose of this study is to help the understanding of learners studying the Korean language and suggest how to use proverbs as the educational materials for the Korean language by understanding the features on proverbs based on the approaches. For the purposes, this study examined the basic meaning and the implicative meaning of proverbs and ascertained that proverbs should be distinguished from the idioms used in the Korean language education through the preceding studies in the use of them.
In Chapter Ⅱ, the definition and features of proverbs were studied. Proverbs have the features as followings. First, their form is short, simple and condensed (summarized). Second, they express the life of the people under oral tradition. Third, they consist of figurative expressions, reflect the phrases of the times and have moral and sarcastic meaning. In addition, it was discovered that they form synonymics relation with simple external structure and their vocabulary have lots of slangs and taboo words. that proverbs should be educated based on the meaning and features. This study examined the worth of proverbs in the side of communication, power to think and culture, and also, it discovered that proverbs are similar with idioms but the meaning between them is different from each other in segmentation of the meaning through their common and different points.
In Chapter Ⅲ, the style and frequency of proverbs shown in the Korean language textbooks were investigated and summarized, and the problems via such investigation were described. First, proverbs have not been educated in an elementary level, but it needs proverb education if the length of a proverb is short, its meaning is clear and the frequency is high. Second, a proverb has no a common point when suggesting it according to a contents or a subject, and such problem may make learners confuse. Even if the subjects of a textbook are bound, it is necessary for mentioning definitely the difference of the contents considering the level of learners. Third, the criterion that the proverbs are expressed in the textbooks published by each educational institution was not clear. So, realized the necessity to select the list of proverbs for the reason.
In Chapter Ⅳ, the criterion in use of proverbs in the Korean language education and how to select them were discussed and they are classified by levels of learners. Above study is the process to suggest effective proverb education that it is able to be used in actual learning sites and searched for the cases that it is able to be used in actual education by suggesting phrased plans to guide learning.
To educate what any proverb should be used properly under any circumstance, it is necessary for suggesting diverse circumstances to learners. The most actual method to understand and express a proverb is to suggest various example sentences according to the circumstance to learners of the Korean language and to familiarize with Korean culture together with a stranger proverb. This study is meaningful that it discovered that elementary-level learners need the appropriate proverb education for the level and arranged teaching-learning models for each level together with practical use of proverbs by suggesting the list of educational proverbs in the Korean language education.
