Scrutinizing the history and related aspects of Chinese derived words in the Korean and Vietnamese languages, this thesis tries to come up with a clearer understanding of the concept” Words of Chinese Origins in the Korean and Vietnamese“. The thesis shows that before having their own writing systems, the Korean and the Vietnamese peoples borrowed Chinese characters to write. Therefore, the Chinese characters are an indispensably integral part of the two mentioned languagues. While the time of naturalization of Chinese words in the Korean and Vietnamese may be different, the words share a lot of similarities since they were mostly “imported” from Tang Dynasty. Accordingly, the Chinese originated words account for 60% and 70% of the Korean and Vietnamese languages respectively.
Through phonological structure of Sino- Korean and Sino- Vietnamese which is presented in thesis not only embraced phonological structure in Korean and Vietnamese and but also found the many corresponded relations in phonological structure of two countries’s language. The thesis’s study concretely presented about initial sounds (initial consonants), medials (vowels) and final consonants of words Chinnese origin in two countries’s language. The initial consonant has 15 consonants without 3 fortis consonants ‘ ㄸ, ㅃ, ㅉ’ and ‘ ㅇ’ which is consonant without sound. According to study let us see almost vowels except ‘ㅒ’ appear with as medial in Sino- Korean. And the final consonants of Sino- Korean consisted of 6 consonants whichs are ‘ㄱ’, ‘ㄴ’, ‘ㄹ’, ‘ㅁ’, ‘ㅂ’, ‘ㅇ’ in 7 basic final consonants of Korean without ‘ㄷ’. In Vietnamese initial sounds system are composed of single consonants and compound consonants and have 20 consonants excluding r (ʐ), g, gh(ɣ) appear with as initial sounds of Sino- Vietnamese. The medial system of Vietnamese has almost pretonal vowels and main vowels, among them pretonal vowels appear almost in native Vietnamese and Sino-Vietnamese but main vowel has only 15 main vowels appear in Sino-Vietnamese except two vowels whichs are ‘e’ and ‘ưa’. The final sounds system of Sino-Vietnamese has 6 consonants /m, n, ŋ, p, t, k/ and 2 semivowel /-w, -j/ . Vietnamese language is different to Korean because Vietnamese is a tonal language, where the meaning of vocabulary will be changed following the position of the tone which is indicated up or down on the main vowel. High-pitch tone and low-pitched tone appear almost in Vietnamese itself and also in Sino-Vietnamese words. In short, the thesis attempts to compare the Sino – Korean and Sino- Vietnamese, thus to better understand them and the link between them.
Words Chinnese origin in 2 countries’s language have origin is began from Chinese and through changes of history stage , each country has had also different characteristic of words Chinnese origin but because having the many similar about origin so there are the many words Chineses origin and Chinese phonology in Korea and Vietnamese whichs are very similar. There are limitation about combination of initial sounds (initial consonants), medials (vowels) and final consonants in Sino- Korean and Sino – Vietnamese so we can find different limitation about this combination in the each history stage. Example, in the Middle Ages 天 was used to be ‘텬’ but there was palatalization so it was became ‘쳔’ in the Modern time and reached to present time it was ‘천’. ‘田’ was similar that, it was changed from ‘ 뎐’ to ‘젼’ in the Korean of Modern time and it was became ‘전’ in the present time. In the Sino- Vietnamese we can find too combinating limitation in the each history stage like that.
Until these days, there are several studies on Sino- Korean and Sino- Vietnamese but none of those has studied the similarities of the Chinese originated words in the Korean and the Vietnamese. The purpose of this thesis is to fill out this blank by analyzing the phonetic systems of the two languages. The findings of this research are not completed, and I intend to extend it in the near future.
