This research is intended to find out the adaptation process of intermarried women and their korean spouses of the decade in Korea by qualitative interview. And this study will have in-depth consideration how they have got over a difficulty. For that purpose, participants were selected by typical case selection out of criterion based selection. As a multicultural family living in a city, the criteria were limited to arranged marriage couples with children as the current elementary school, a Korean husbands and Southeast Asian wives. The participants in this research consisted of thirty(fifty couples). And the average duration of marriage is 11.3 years.
Data was collected through individual in-depth interviews from March to April 2009. Individual in-depth interviews take about one hour 10 minutes. The contents of the interview were the adaptation process of intermarried women and their korean spouses, difficulties, Coping strategies, identity as a multicultural family, the future of multicultural family.
The study method has followed the procedure of the data analysis suggested by Creswell and qualitative software program Nvivo 8, by using both qualitative analysis. Peer support group, reflective journal writing, member checking was used for the rigorous research. In order to determine whether in-depth interview is possible, TOPIK was conducted to intermarried women. Participants averaged 81.3 points, so that in-depth interviews were available.
The Findings of the study are summarized as follow. Participated intermarried women and their korean spouses in this research experienced confusion through the process of combination and settlement and the efforts to adapt to establish a harmony. Specifically, first, the international marriage motive of intermarried women and their korean spouses was a different. In case of korean spouses, they recognized incompetent to korean woman and decided to international marriage. In case of intermarried women, they had envy international marriage with developed countries men.
Second, participants experienced early confusion and strive for settlement through period that confusion and adaption. They were co-parenting their children, go out together with the relationship with extended family. They feel the difficulty of the discrimination and children's education. However, using the strategy of dialogue and understanding, they admitted and coordinated cultural differences and strengthen family unity.
Third, participants establish a harmony through the process of confusion and adaption. Research revealed that they did not feel multicultural family. It also features recognition of no relation with multicultural family. In conclusion, the participants established unique identity, not 'multicultural' family but multicultural 'family'. Intermarried women and their korean spouses expected multicultural family's future that the it would have increase and a mighty power. A common agreement was derived that it is necessary that the nation have a responsibility beyond individual efforts.
Most of study, there was limited to focus on only intermarried women. However, this study approaches in-depth understanding of multicultural family by participating korean spouses. Research through data analysis using Nvivo 8 in the process to increase the reliability is significant. In addition, this study revealed adaptive strategies in Korea and overcoming a difficulty through participant's practical experience.
