The purpose of this study is to establish the similarities and differences of meaning between Korean and Chinese idiomatic phrase which take body glossary as central and explore the cultural causes of them. The objective of this research is to help those Chinese learners of Korean language to understand Korean idiomatic phrase more easily and use it more skillfully.
Idiomatic phrase, which is an important part of language, have profound meanings beyond superficial literal meanings. It's cultural heritage inseparably related to the language life of any nation or country, contains the time honored living experiences and culture of the societies, just as they have been. So it'll be a difficulty to the language learners who don’t have the knowledge about the country. Therefore studying idiomatic phrase can be the key to understanding the essence of a nation or a country.
Chapter One offers a brief introduction of the research subject, goal, and methodology, as well as a literary review of previous studies and findings in this field.
In Chapter Two, the author first defines idiomatic phrase and then tells the causes of formation and through the comparison of idiomatic phrase and other language forms to find the similarities and differences of the characters between Korean and Chinese language.
Chapter Three establishes the similarities and differences of meaning between Korean and Chinese idiomatic phrases which take body glossary
as central. This study bases on the idiomatic phrases about five body glossary ‘head’, ‘eye’, ‘mouth’, ‘hand’, ‘foot’. This chapter categorizes the idiomatic phrases into four groups: ‘same-form-same-meaning’, ‘same-
form-different-meaning’, ‘idiomatic meaning only in Korean’ and ‘only in Korean’ according to expressive form and content, and then compares them to find their similarities and differences in meanings.
Chapter Four finds out the cultural causes of the similarities and differences of meaning between Korean and Chinese idiomatic phrase which take body glossary as central based on the research results of the chapter three. This chapter categorizes the idiomatic phrases into five groups: ‘same-form-same-meaning’, ‘same-form-different-meaning’, ‘idiomatic meaning only in Korean’, ‘only in Korean’ and ‘only in Chinese’ in terms of expressive form and content.
