The aim of Korean education is to improve the communicative proficiency. Listening comprehension is regarded as an essential skill among four language skills. Therefore, the importance of listening skill should be emphasized and preceded when studying.
For the successful communication, students need to be exposed to the real communicative situations. The communicative proficiency is related not only to the linguistic elements but also to the non-linguistic and socio-cultural elements. Thus, to improve Korean listening skills and to succeed in communicating, it is necessary to know Korean culture as well.
One of the ways for improving communicative proficiency and getting familiar to Korean culture is listening practice through films. Films can be a good method of listening studies because it includes various life styles, behaviors, emotions, tones, and culture of Korean. Also, students are needed to learn listening strategy because, in real communicative situation, students will sometimes have trouble in understanding what they are listening. At that time, they should avoid, or get over this situation by using their strategy. In this study, I suggested several films that are worth watching in Korean class, and also suggested an effective teaching model, textbook model, and the way how to evaluate the students afterwards.
In conclusion, Korean education through films offers not only the enhancement of learners' intrinsic motivation in Korean, but also the improvement of the learners' listening and general Korean proficiency. Therefore, it is one of the effective methods worth applying in Korean class.
