This study aims to reveal the pattern of the lingual development of Korean language learners from the perspective of interlanguage pragmatics, by analyzing how the pattern of the acquisition of pragmatic knowledge of Korean language learners with different proficiency, and what it is that such a change shows concerning the characteristics of their L2 knowledge. This was to review the correlation between lingual development and the pragmatic competence by conducting a comparative analysis of the pattern of commending request strategies shown in each stage, by classifying Chinese Korean language learners as beginners, intermediate learners, and advanced learners, and by their proficiency.
Therefore, this study selected a ‘request’ speech act, of which probability of being unrealized due to the absence of inputs also in the beginner group is minimal because it is most frequently used from among speech acts, which are entered from the beginning stage of the learning of the Korean language, and measured the pragmatic competence of learners by analyzing the pattern of the pragmatic competence of learners, which is selected for controlling the intensity of a speaker’s request, on the basis of the use of Koreans. Herein, concerning request strategies, the study analyzed them by classifying as a direct stage, a conventionally indirect stage, and a non-conventionally indirect stage by degree. Also, the study set up the variables of a request situation, as the character of the requested contents, a familiarity relationship, and a power relationship, and analyzed whether the learners perceive the influence of these variables and properly realize them. As per research subjects, the study assembled a group comprising 30 Korean national language speakers (KNSs) and 90 Chinese Korean language learners (CKLs), comprising 30 CKLs in each group by lingual level, totaling 120 participants, and collected data from them by using DCT.
When it comes to the composition of this research, first in ChapterⅠ, the study revealed the need for and the purpose of the research, and research problems, and looked into variables concerned with the development of learners’ speech act as well as the need for developmental science research in a study on the speech act of the Korean language, by reviewing previous studies on the request speech act. In Chapter Ⅱ, the study considered the concept of the request speech act, the strategy theory, and strategy types as a theoretical background of the study, and made a basic discussion over the analysis framework. In Chapter Ⅲ, the study dealt with the tools and procedures of a test for tracking the type of the use of request strategies by lingual level, and in Chapter Ⅳ, the study verified research problems established through a statistical analysis, and analyzed results. Lastly, in Chapter Ⅴ, the study wrapped up this research by reanalyzing the previous analysis comprehensively and mentioning the limitations of the research.
The research discovered the following in relation to the use of degree in the realization of the speech act of Chinese Korean language learners. That is, learners may experience pragmatic failures not only because of the negative transfer of mother tongue, but also because there is a defect in a lingual resource for expressing adequate politeness. Also, as the lingual proficiency of Korean language learners becomes higher, they show pragmatic development, which looked close to the pattern of the performance of Koreans’ request speech act, and such pragmatic development was not sufficiently made also for advanced learners.
With regard to the above discussions, this study holds the following meanings. First, the study demonstrated the dynamicity of learners’ language according to developmental stages from the perspective of interlanguage pragmatics, by revealing the appearance of specific transition in the pattern of the realization of the speech act between Korean language learners’ groups by lingual level, whereas existing studies on the speech act of middle language focused on how much difference in the performance of speech act there is between foreign language learners and mother tongue speakers and how much the mother tongue is influential to the difference through the comparison of foreign language learners’ performance of speech act with that of mother tongue speakers. Second, it has not been considered up to now in the Korean language education that the pragmatic competence may be acquired and developed from the early stage of learning just as other factors of lingual ability. Accordingly, research subjects have been restricted to an advanced learners group. However, this study sought the reality of learners’ pragmatic competence that was owned by the learners beginning in the early stage of learning, by attracting beginners and intermediate learners also to become research subjects.
