This study started from the recognition that as for the problem of deficiency consisting in a number of teaching methods and development of textbooks that correspond to the educational reality of Korean language, there is an immense need for the establishment of resources and the discovery of principles for development that cater for Korean language education. For this purpose of building necessary resources for the development of teaching materials for Korean language, the past and present appearances of the teaching materials for Korean language must be preceded by an accurate analysis and judgement. For this reason, the set down the teaching materials for Korean language used in the 19th century as the subject of its analysis, though it has not so far been treated with due appreciation, in an attempt to conduct a systematic analysis on its characteristics and significance as serious teaching materials for Korean language. There were more or less number of Korean grammar books written by the foreign visitors during the age of enlightenment, which in particular was best represented by the 「韓英文法」 by Underwood, the characteristics and significance of which were specially examined with thorough analysis and assessment as a teaching material of a foreign language.
Chapter Ⅱ shed lights on the characteristics of 「韓英文法」 as a teaching material for Korean language. It suggests the objectives, directions, methods and activities for learning and in the structural dimension, it was divided into 'Part Ⅰ' and 'Part Ⅱ' to approach the subject from the perspective of Korean language itself and English. This type of contents and structural features are deemed to be well demonstrated as a textbook for Korean language, clearly distinguishing from other Korean grammar books for written by foreign contemporaries.
Chapter Ⅲ analysed 「韓英文法」 by relying on the dichotomy between contents and methods for teaching grammar, having organized various contents for grammar teaching through a careful selection and arrangement. It mainly focuses and is based on the aspects of language use and its educational effects in real communication. Though it was centered on the form for grammar description, it also had some parts that made descriptions with much weight attached to the meaning of the language. Especially, it explained the elements of grammar by contrasting to the mother tongue, and also exhibited outstanding descriptions by giving account of differences and similarities between each element of Korean grammar. Grammar teaching methods mainly provides the information in a descriptive form by taking approach of the bottom-up model, which was examined here in contrast to the bottom-up model used today.
Chapter Ⅳ assessed the implication and significance of 「韓英文法」. Firstly, the books of the contemporary writers, Ross and Scott, were largely framed as teaching materials mostly consisting conversations and dialogues, but the writing by Underwood boasted of its advanced techniques as a more evolved teaching material for Korean language by describing grammar related to the real practice of communication in contrast to his own mother language. In today's perspective, these achievements will be acknowledge for devising an integrated approaches of contrasting languages, grammar learning and use of the real language in consideration of the learner unfamiliar with the language.
The results of the study have following meanings.
First, the historical value and significance of modern Korean teaching materials were rediscovered. Especially, among the books on Korean composed during the enlightenment period, it distinguished itself from other Korean grammar books in terms of the features to the extent that its value as historical resources were rediscovered.
Second, it facilitated the development of teaching materials for Korean language from the perspective of contrasting languages by analyzing the contents of the materials written by a foreigner.
Despite such significance, this contains some limits, which require further investigations and researches on the issue. First, it had not stretched far enough to conduct analysis on the learning materials of the Korean language written by foreigners from the English speaking country of modern times. Second, this study is restricted to the learning materials for the English speaking students learning Korean language. Therefore, in order to develop proper textbooks catering for the various needs of the foreign students in recent days, it is recommended to carry out researches on learning materials of other languages such as Japanese and French, composed by foreigners.
