In today’s globalized world where the boundaries of nations and markets are becoming blurred, languages are not just tools for communication but catalyst for advancement. In particular, as the status of the countries where English is the dominant language has been enhanced, English has long been used as a universal language. Therefore, the role of English interpreters has become more important than ever before. They are creators of language while helping communication between people who speak different languages. It is important for interpreters to have a perfect command of languages and acquire extensive knowledge in order to translate the speakers intended message.

In this thesis, I organized general expressions excerpted from newss, magazines and speech transcripts. I hope that the expressions in this thesis are useful for interpreters.

현대는 세계화(globalization)와 유비쿼터스(ubiquitous)라는 두 단어로 특징지어지는 시대다. 국가와 시장의 경계선이 사라지고 매체와 기술의 융합이 급속도로 진행되는 변화의 시대에 언어는 단순한 의미전달의 도구가 아닌 변화의 흐름을 가속화하는 촉매로 작용한다. 특히 영어는 사용 국가들의 정치, 경제적 위상이 높아짐에 따라 세계 공통어로서 자리매김한지 이미 오래다. 그만큼 영어를 기반으로 정확한 의미를 전달하고 해석하는 통∙번역사의 역할은 역시 단순한 전달자가 아닌 이러한 변화의 중심축에서 한국어와 영어 사이를 가로지르는 창조자의 역할을 한다. 따라서 통∙번역사는 정확한 정보의 분석과 전달과 발화자의 의도 및 언어의 내적 의미를 파악하기 위해 언어적 소양은 물론 다양한 배경 지식과 표현을 갖추는 것이 기본일 것이다.

이 논문에서는 통∙번역의 실무에 유용한 표현을 분야별로 정리했다. 또한 예문을 통해 표현이 실제 활용되는 사례를 제시해 정확성과 유용성을 극대화하였다. 이를 통해 통∙번역은 단순히 단어와 단어, 문장과 문장을 일대일 대응이 되도록 기계적으로 옮기는 것이 아니라 화용론의 차원에서 발화자의 의도 및 상황에 따른 의미론적 변화를 적확하게 전달하는 것임을 보여주고자 한다.
