The purpose of this study is to analyze the needed tasks in real world for immigrant women on marriage. For the study, the need analysis for tasks that immigrant women would face in the real world has been done by interviewing and doing surveys on these objects; 1) immigrant women who learn Korean more than 2 hours a week living in Seoul and the suburb of Seoul and Incheon, 2) their husbands, 3) instructors who teaches Korean to immigrant women.
Recently, the analysis using tasks has been presented as a new way of approach of analysis while linguistical analysis unit has been a traditional way of need analysis. Long in his study proposed that tasks are the practical analysis units in need analysis. With this background, therefore, the need analysis has been done in this study to set the target tasks, which are the prior conditions of effective Korean teaching to immigrant women on marriage. The target texts are chosen by the need analysis, and they enabled us to clarify how immigrant women, their husbands, and instructors understand frequency, importance, and difficulty on individual tasks.
Introduction in Chapter I states the study thesis while discussing these matters; 1) the dramatic increase of immigrant women on marriage and their actual condition, and 2) the importance of setting task unit for planning a curriculum and designing textbooks for immigrant women on marriage. For immigrant women on their marriage, the learners are under special circumstance. Therefore, it is discussed the importance of need analysis for target task to select the target task that can be used in real world.
In Chapter II, three matters are stated; 1) the definition of the general idea of tasks, 2) the methodological principles and the advantages of task-based language teaching which is the new substitute way of synthetic approaches and analytic approaches in second language teaching. These background makes a case for task-based need analysis and grounded the theoretical basis for the method of task unit need analysis.
Chapter III shows the method of study which is the process of finding answer for the thesis question - the object of this study, data, measurement, and process. The questionnaire has been made after the interviews with immigrant women, their husbands, and instructors, and this questionnaire is used for the measurement. Collected data has been used for frequency, descriptive statistic, multi t - examination, analyzing objects dispersion, and post checking by SPSS and SAS programs.
Chapter IV shows the object tasks which are the results of task-unit need analysis, and also the result of individual tasks understood by three groups of immigrant women, their husbands, and instructors. In the case of immigrant women, it is pointed that their understanding on individual tasks are varied.
In Chapter V, conclusion states in two points; 1) the reason the result of this study - the understanding difference on frequency, importance, difficulty - should be emphasized to the planning of Korean teaching curriculum and designing textbooks, and 2) the suggestion for post studies.
