“??????????” or the Korean Wave, known as "Hallyu", is defined as Korea’s (or Korean’s) cultural power to move the minds of people around the world and to determine the Korean's image. The Korean Wave is a cultural phenomenon which Korean TV dramas, films, superstars, singers, pop music and online games become more and more popular abroad.
The history of teaching Korean language in Thailand has started since 1986 or for over 20 years up until now. Recently, Korean Wave (Hallyu) is becoming very popular among Thai students. The number of Thai students who would like to study Korean culture both in universities and in language institutes has been increasing. In order to develop Korean teaching, this study aims at analyzing the problems in teaching Korean in Thailand. Moreover, the study analyzes the influences of Korean Wave on Thai students who learn Korean language.
This study is composed of five chapters. The first chapter shows the purpose, general overview of the research and methodology. The study is done through the survey by questionnaire method. The questionnaires were collected from two hundred Thai students majoring in Korean language and two hundred Thai students non-majoring in Korean language in Korean classes from August 2006 to February 2007.
The second chapter presents two main parts. The first part describes about the history of Korean language teaching in Thailand, also the list of universities that offer the Korean language program in Thailand. At present, there are seven public universities offering the major in Korean language and about 19-20 universities teach Korean language. The analysis of the questionnaire is given in another part. It shows that Thai students majoring in Korean language have different objectives in learning Korean comparing to those who do not major in Korean language. The latter group is more interesting in Korean culture (music, film, movie, dance, etc.) while the students with Korean major are more looking forward to use the language knowledge for their future career.
The third chapter is the analysis on Korean teaching and learning problems in Thailand by using a chart to demonstrate the percentage of satisfaction (excellent/good/fair/poor/very poor). This part indicates three main problems: teacher, student and instructional media problems. The summary of the student interview is also provided.
The fourth chapter presents the result of Korean teaching problems based on the third chapter’s questionnaire survey as well as the resolutions for these problems. The study shows that there are many problems on learning Korean language in Thailand as follow;
1. Thai instructors are not able to pronounce some phonemes in Korean as native Korean people do.
2. Lack of Thai and Korean instructors to teach Korean language especially Thai instructors who have experiences in Korea.
3. Korean instructors are lack of teaching ability since some of them are not directly trained to be language instructors.
4. Korean instructors cannot communicate with students very well because they cannot speak Thai fluently
5. Lack of Korean pedagogical materials, such as Korean language textbook, Test of Proficiency in Korean book, and tape, CD for practice Korean listening, and also the materials that explain the Korean language in Thai.
6. Difference in the language nature between Korean and Thai grammar. Korean uses honorific words, stemming from Chinese characters. Furthermore, pronunciation is difficult for Thai student; for example, the first consonants and phonological structure in Korean language
7. Lack of information about studying in Korea and scholarship, and tuition fee in Korea is very expensive for Thai students.
The last chapter is about the conclusion and the future of Korean learning in Thailand. Korean learning in Thailand will continue in the future. First of all, Thai people can easily get along with foreign culture and also stimulate cultural interactions between the nations. Secondly, Korean wave has already been a growing trend in Thailand. Thai people are fanatic over Korean dramas, films, superstars, singers, pop music, games and various commodities made in Korea. There are also wide-ranging activities and products from Korea such as music, online games, commercial products, culture and language. As a result, these lead to a sharp surge in demand for Korean language education among Thai students. In response to the lack of Korean language and cultural resources in Thailand, several projects have been undertaken to develop and support the instructors. These campaigns would definitely help promoting the Korean study in Thailand as well.
