The balanced communicative competence has been a major challenge for the recent English education that is focusing on only reading and grammar. Communicative competence, or English itself, is considered to cover not only receptive skills such as listening and reading but also productive skills such as speaking and writing. That is, English education should touch on all these four skills interrelatedly, not separatedly. This viewpoint gives a solid foundation for the integration between skills. Since both listening and speaking commonly use sounds in their process, it is assumed that listening is more closely related to speaking than any other skills. This thesis has mainly observed how closely listening competence is related to speaking competence, which means the correlation of these two language skills. To verify their association, an experiment was conducted at U middle school in 2007. The 159 third graders(only male) participated in this experiment for ten weeks. These subjects were randomly divided into two groups-control and experiment group. (80 students in the control group and 79 students in the experiment group) During the English classes, only English was employed for the experiment group, while Korean was used for the control group. The scores which each student received from national listening tests simply describe how capable he could be in the listening area. At the same time, the scores of students' speaking performative test are considered to stand for their own speaking competence. This speaking performative test evaluates students' speaking competence in six different components: pronunciation, fluency, grammar competence, discourse competence, sociolinguistic competence and overall comprehensibility. Then, the listening test scores and speaking performative test scores were examined by using correlation analysis. According to this experiment, there is a positive correlation between listening competence and speaking competence regardless of groups. However, the correlation coefficient of the experiment group is larger than that of the control group. The experiment group also shows a sharp increase in its correlation coefficient compared to the control group. A high correlation coefficient has been derived especially from the medium experiment group(students who belong to the experiment group and their listening competence is at the medium level among subjects). In this case, the listening competence can account for a large amount of speaking variance, which amounts to almost 60%. Then, among six speaking subskills, overall comprehensibility is most strongly related to listening competence. Most listening items were about main ideas or details, which cover content, not form. Also, overall comprehensibility is how well you understand the content of the messages. It is natural, therefore, that listening competence is closely related to overall comprehensibility because of their common factors. This experiment, in other words, reveals that the listening skills are positively associated with the speaking skills. This close association implies that the integration of listening and speaking should be achieved to get the most out of every English communicative class. ,免费韩语论文,韩语论文范文 |
