스트릿 댄스 배틀은 놀이문화로 시작하여 이후 모든 스트릿 댄스 장르에 영향을 주며 확산되었다. 스트릿 댄스 발전에는 다양한 요소들이 영향을 미쳤지만 그 중 배틀문화는 스트릿 댄스의 전 세계적인 확장에 결정적인 영향을 미쳤다. 이처럼 배틀 문화가 확산되고 중요해지면서 배틀의 입상실적이 대학입학 또는 장학금에 영향을 끼치는 등 배틀의 승패는 더욱 중요한 부분이 되었다. 하지만 배틀의 승패는 사람에 의해서 평가되기 때문에 심사위원의 주관적인 평가에 의존하여 우승자를 가리는 특징을 가지고 있다. 따라서 심사위원의 주관적인 평가에 관한 문제가 있다면 배틀 결과를 신뢰할 수 없을 것이다. 이에 본 연구는 국내 스트릿 댄스 배틀에서 심사위원들이 어떠한 기준을 가지고 심사를 하는지 알아보고 심사의 객관성을 확인하여 향후 신뢰성과 타당성 있는 심사기준을 마련하는데 지침이 될 수 있는 기초자료를 제공하는 것에 그 목적이 있다.
연구대상은 스트릿 댄스 분야 중 락킹, 팝핀, 왁킹, 비보잉, 프리스타일 힙합의 전공자이며 스트릿 댄서로서 활동해온 경력이 최소 15년 이상 된 전문프로 댄서들로 각 장르별 4명씩 선정하였고, 질문지를 통한 인터뷰를 바탕으로 답을 확인하였다. 질문의 내용으로는 심사기준 유무와 심사기준요소, 심사기준 차이, 심사에 관한 의견을 중심으로 질적 연구방법 중의 하나인 현상학적 연구방법을 활용하였고 추출된 자료는 질적 분석방법 중의 하나인 주제 분석을 수행하였다. 결과는 다음과 같다.
첫째, 국내 스트릿 댄스 배틀에서 심사위원은 심사기준을 가지고 심사를 보는 것으로 나타났다.
둘째, 심사기준의 가장 공통적인 요소는 음악성, 기본기, 기술성, 배틀성, 즉흥성, 캐릭터, 무대매너 이렇게 일곱 가지로 나타났다.
셋째, 국내 스트릿 댄스 배틀에서 심사위원간의 심사기준 관점 차이는 대부분 차이가 있는 것으로 나타났으며 그 중 본인의 장르를 심사할 때는 기본기와 기술성을 집중해서 보고 타 장르를 심사할 때는 음악성과 캐릭터, 배틀성, 무대매너를 집중해서 보는 것으로 나타났다.
넷째, 국내 스트릿 댄스 배틀에서 심사위원간의 심사기준 중요도 차이는 대부분 차이가 없는 것으로 나타났으며 본인의 장르를 심사할 때와 타 장르를 심사할 때 동일하게 보는 심사의 중요도 순서는 기본기, 음악성, 기술성, 배틀성, 캐릭터, 무대매너, 즉흥성 순이었다.
다섯째, 개인 배틀과 단체 배틀의 심사기준 차이는 대부분 차이가 있는 것으로 나타났으며 그 중 개인 배틀을 심사할 때는 개인의 기량을 중점적으로 보고 단체 배틀을 심사할 때는 전체적인 팀워크, 루틴, 팀의 조화 및 밸런스를 집중해서 보는 것으로 나타났다.
위와 같은 결과를 바탕으로 국내 스트릿 댄스 배틀에서 심사위원은 본인만의 심사기준을 가지고 심사를 보는 것으로 나타나 스트릿 댄스 배틀의 심사기준 유무를 확인할 수 있다. 더불어 심사기준 요소를 예체능분야 대회의 심사기준과 비교하여 논의해보면서 스트릿 댄스 배틀만이 가질 수 있는 심사기준 요소들을 제시할 수 있다. 이러한 연구는 스트릿 댄스의 문화적 가치 확립에 긍정적인 효과를 기대할 수 있고, 스트릿 댄스 발전에 많은 도움이 될 것이다.
이에 본 연구의 결과를 토대로 국내 스트릿 댄스 배틀의 심사기준 요소들을 활용하여 제도적인 심사기준을 마련하거나 심사에 관련하여 참가자들을 대상으로 후속연구가 진행된다면 보다 의미 있는 연구가 될 것이라고 판단된다. 앞으로도 스트릿 댄스와 관련된 연구는 지속적으로 이루어져야하며 이러한 연구 결과들을 통해 국내 스트릿 댄스의 성장과 발전을 기대한다.

The street dance battle has started as a recreational culture, and it has been expanding and influencing on sub genres of street dance. There are many elements effecting on the advancement of street dance; but among them, the battling culture has been the core factor for expanding worldwide. As battling culture has been expanding, winning award in battle is important for college entrance and scholarships; and the battles have become increasingly important. However, the battle results are evaluated by humans; in other words, the personal evaluations of the judges are used for determining the winners and losers. Therefore, if there are flaws in the judges’ subjective judgements, the battle results cannot be reliable. In this study, the judging criteria of the judges in domestic street dance battles are examined, and their level of objectivity is determined. This will provide a fundamental resource for constructing guidelines for the future reliability and validity in the criteria for judging the street dance battles.
The subjects of this study are the dancers who majored in street dance and have been practicing locking, popping, waacking, b-boying, and freestyle hip-hop. They are experts with at least 15 years of professional experiences. From each genre, 4 dancers were selected, and the questionnaires were conducted through interviews. The content of the questions include whether judging criteria can be defined, as well as the elements of, differences in, and opinions about the judging criteria. The phenomenological research method was used, which is a qualitative research method. The obtained data was analyzed by using subject analysis. The result was as follows.
First, the judges of domestic street dance battles were shown to have set judging criteria.
Second, the most common elements of the judging criteria were shown to be seven factors: music, basics, techniques, battling ability, improvisation, characters, and stage manner.
Third, the judges in the domestic street dance battles were shown to have differences in their standards of judging criteria. When the judges are evaluating a dance of one’s own expertise, they seemed to be focused on the basics and techniques; and when they were evaluating other genres, they were focused on the music, character, battling ability, and stage manner.
Fourth, for the degree of importance among the judging criteria between different judges at the domestic street battles, it was shown to have no difference. When the judges evaluated the dances of their own expertise and the other dance genres, similar weight was placed in the following order from the greatest to the least: basics, music, techniques, battling ability, character, stage manner, and improvisation.
Fifth, there generally were differences in judging criteria between individual battles and group battles. When evaluating the individual battle, the judges focused on individual capacity; when evaluating the group battle, the overall teamwork, routine, and team harmony were more closely evaluated.
Based on the above results, the judges at domestic street dance battles were shown to have their individual judging criteria. Furthermore, the judging criteria for street dance were compared to the judging criteria of other competitions in arts and sports. There are unique judging criteria that only the street battle judges can have. This study can positively contribute to the construction of street dance culture and the cultural values of the street dance; it will be helpful for the future development of the street dance.
Based on the result of this study, the judging criteria of the street dance battles can be utilized for providing standards. This will be significant for the future studies related to the street dance battles. Therefore, more researches on street dance battle should be conducted; and through those studies, the street dance would grow and expand.
