이 논문은 현재의 실제 국어 생활에 나타나는 ‘필요에 의하여 줄여 쓰는 말’, 즉‘줄인말’을 분석하고 그 유형을 살펴보았다.
먼저, 1장인 서론에서는 이와 같은 줄인말 사용 빈도의 증가에 맞추어 연구 목적을 제시하고 연구사들을 검토하였으며, 연구방법과 연구범위를 제시하였다.
2장에서는 줄인말의 이해를 돕기 위하여 이론적 배경을 정리하였다. 국어사전에 규정된 준말의 정의와 국어학자들이 제시한 준말의 개념을 조사한 것을 토대로 줄인말의 개념을 정리하였으며, 줄인말의 형성 동기와 조어 양상 역시 정리하였다.
3장에서는 줄인말의 다양한 유형에 대하여 살펴보았다. 문법 단위에 따라 단어 단위와 단어 이상 단위로 나누었으며, 사용 분야와 쓰임에 따라 지시적인 사용, 상업적인 사용, 사회적인 사용 등으로 나누었다. 그리고, 외래어에서 온 줄인말 역시 하나의 유형으로 정리하였다.
세부적으로 언론이나 집단에서 필요에 의하여 사용하는 줄인말과 줄인말로 기능하는 단어들, 요즘 들어 두드러지는 상호 및 홍보용으로 사용하는 줄인말과 대중문화에서의 줄인말 사용, 속어형 줄인말과 화제성 줄인말을 살펴보았다.
4장에서는 이렇게 유형화된 줄인말들이 어떠한 양상으로 확대․재생산 되는가에 대하여 줄인말의 교체 및 결합, 줄인말의 확장, 다른 (문자)언어의 결합, 풍자적인 의미를 담는 줄인말의 경우 등으로 나누었으며, 이와 비슷한 양상으로 줄인말이 변화되는 경우에는 형태적으로 변형되는 경우를 넘어 의미가 변하기도 함을 알 수 있었다.
5장에서는 세태를 반영하는 줄인말의 사회적 경향과 줄인말의 특징인 확장 및 겹침, 줄인말의 남발에 대하여 분석하였다.
끝으로, 6장에서는 줄인말이 가진 비중이 갈수록 커지고 있음을 인식하고 무분별한 남발은 경계하면서도 세태를 적극적으로 반영하는 언어 연구의 대표적인 주제임을 주지하고 결론을 맺었다.

The purpose of this study is to analyze ‘the shorted word out of necessity’, ‘abbreviation(artificial short)’ that is happened in recent use of Korean and to examine their types.
First, in the introduction(unit 1), the purpose, the method, and the scope of the study were suggested on the high frequency in use of the abbreviation.
In unit 2, the theoretical background was examined(organized) to help understanding the abbreviation. The concept of the abbreviation was based on the definition of the abbreviation 2(all types of short) which was found in a Korean language dictionary and was suggested by the Korean linguists. And the motive for the forming and the coinage aspect of the abbreviation that were based on them, too.
In unit 3, the various types of abbreviation were examined. It could be divided into a word unit and multi-word units according to the unit of grammar, it also could be divided into designate, commercial, and social use of words following the fields and the use of words. And the abbreviation from foreign words is also organized into a certain type. In more details, there were some words that could function as abbreviation and professional words for the media out of necessity, predominant shortened words in pop culture recently, and the abbreviation as slang words.
In unit 4, these abbreviations were divided into the replacement and the combination and the expansion of the abbreviation, combination with other languages(written words), and the abbreviation which has the ironic overtones, an so on. And the modification of the abbreviation mean morphologic changes as well as semantic changes.
In unit 5, the societal trend of the abbreviation which reflects the social conditions of the times, the characters and overuse of the abbreviation were analyzed.
In conclusion, the main topic was that should lookout for the indiscriminate overuse of the abbreviation, but reflect actively the social conditions of the times as the abbreviation accounts for a greater and greater portion.
