본 논문은 랩의 구조를 분석하고 랩을 창작하는 방법을 탐색하고자 하였다. 랩을 분석하거나 창작하는 과정은 악보 중심이 아닌 드럼 중심의 기록이 필요하다고 생각한다. 왜냐하면, 랩을 창작하기 위해서는 기존의 랩을 공부해야 하는데, 이때 랩을 분석하는 방법으로서 드럼을 중심으로 랩을 분석하는 것이 효율적이라 생각하기 때문이다. 이를 위해 다음 세 가지 연구 문제를 설정하였다. 첫째, 랩을 익히는데 드럼의 개념이 왜 중요한가? 둘째, 랩의 구조를 분석하는 방법은 무엇인가? 셋째, 랩을 창작하기 위해서 알아야하는 개념은 무엇인가?
이러한 질문을 탐색하기 위하여 현재까지 나온 랩 관련 논문과 음악, 서적에서 자료를 수집했다. 또한 랩을 창작하는 래퍼들과 심층 면담을 했고, 수년간 현장에서 만난 랩 창작자들과의 교류를 통해 연구 자료를 확보했다. 본 논문을 통해 랩의 구조를 분석하는 방법과 랩 창작 방법을 이해할 수 있으리라 생각한다.
연구의 결과를 요약하면 다음과 같다.
첫째, 랩 가사를 박자에 맞춰 가창하기 위해서는 박자를 이루는 리듬 악기인 드럼의 개념을 이해하는 것이 필수라는 것을 확인하였다. 본 논문에서는 드럼의 개념을 그림과 표로 설명했다. 그 후 박자에 맞춰 창작자가 가사를 가창하는 방법을 제시했다. 드럼의 구성 요소 중 가장 핵심적인 킥, 하이엣, 스네어를 중심으로 라임을 배치하거나 플로우를 형성하는 방법을 설명함으로써 랩에서 드럼을 활용하는 방법을 탐구했다.
둘째, 랩의 구성 요소를 메시지, 라임, 플로우로 정리해서 각각의 요소의 특성을 정리했다. 랩이란 복합적인 장르이며 각각의 구성 요소를 단계별로 익힐 필요가 있다고 생각한다. 따라서 각각의 요소에 대한 개념을 체계적으로 정리했고, 각 파트별로 랩을 익히는데 도움을 줄 수 있으리라 생각한다. 또 랩의 구조를 분석하는 방법을 앞서 설명한 드럼의 요소를 기준으로 정리하여 마디의 개념과 랩의 속도를 시각화할 수 있었다.
셋째, 랩의 창작을 위한 개념을 한국어 특성에 맞게 정리하였다. 아직까지 랩에 관한 연구는 미흡하고, 그 특성상 영어 랩에 기준이 맞춰져 있다. 본 논문에서는 한국어 특성에 맞게 라임의 종류를 정리했고, 한국어 리듬의 특성을 설명한 후 플로우를 만드는 방법을 제시했다. 뿐만 아니라 기존 한국어 랩의 구조를 분석해 랩을 창작하기 위한 과정을 순차적으로 설명했다.
랩의 분석 방법은 악보가 아니라 드럼을 중심으로 직시할 수 있어야 한다. 랩은 드럼 위에 올린 언어를 어떻게 배치하고 발음하는가에 따라서 흐름이 생겨나기 때문이다. 음표를 읽을 수도 없는데 음표로 랩을 표현하는 것은 현실적이지 않다고 생각한다. 보다 쉽고 직관적으로 접근해야할 필요가 있기에 본 논문에서는 드럼의 요소와 그림을 통해 랩을 설명하였다.
또, 기존 연구에서는 라임의 종류를 주로 다루고 있지만 라임의 종류보다는 라임을 배치하는 방법을 설명하는 것이 보다 창작에 활용적이라 생각한다. 본 논문에서는 15가지 라임 배치표를 제시하고, 기존 랩 가사를 예시로 설명하여 랩의 구조를 시각화하였다.
본 논문에서는 랩을 보다 실용적으로 분석하는 방법으로 호흡 표시하기, 드럼의 킥, 하이엣, 스네어 표시하기를 제시했다. 그리고 플로우의 종류를 그림과 번호를 통해 설명하고자 했다. 또한 그 방법들을 기존의 랩에 적용해 분석하고 비교했다. 이를 통해 이 논문은 랩의 구조 분석과 랩 창작에 필요한 실용적인 연구라는 것을 확인하였다.

This research is written to explore the structure of rap songs and rap writing techniques. When writing a rap song or breaking down other artists’ songwriting process, studying its drumbeats is more important than studying its music. Because, in order to write a rap song, studying existing rap songs is critical, and, at that point, it is more efficient to break down the songs focusing on their drums. In order to do so, following three experimental questions are set. Firstly, why are the drums significant when learning how to rap? Secondly, what is the proper method of studying the structure of rap songs? Thirdly, what are the concepts to know when writing a rap song?
To explore those questions, research s, music, and books about rap were collected. In addition, research data were collected through interviews conducted with the rappers producing their own songs and long-term relationships with producers in the scene. This research would help people to understand how to break down the structure of a rap song and rap writing techniques.
The summary of the result of the research is as following.
Firstly, the fact that it is crucial to understand the concept of the drum, which is a rhythmic instrument that forms the beats, in order to rap on the beat, is found. The concept of the drum is explained with pictures and charts in the . And the method of rapping on the beat is displayed. The way to use drums properly when rapping is explored through explaining how to locate rhymes and make flows with kick, hi-hat, and snare as the center, which are key components of the drum.
Secondly, since the elements of rap are message, rhyme, and flow, the characteristic of each element is organized. Rap is a complex genre, and thus it would be necessary to learn each element step by step. Therefore, the concepts of each element are organized systematically, and it would help people to learn every part of rap. Also the concept of measure and speed of a rap could be visualized through analyzing the structure of rap songs according to the elements of rap, which was explained above.
Thirdly, rap-writing techniques are organized based on the characteristics of Korean. The existing researches on rap are insufficient yet and are focused on rap in English due to its characteristic. But this organizes different kinds of rhyme according to characteristics of Korean and explains characteristics of Korean rhythmic patterns and how to make flows. In addition, the process of rap writing is explained step by step through analyzing old rap songs in Korea.
Analyzing a rap song should not be based on its music but the drum. It is because a rap works according to how words are located on the beat and pronounced. It is not practical to describe a rap with musical notes since they are not even readable. Since it is necessary to approach it more easily and instinctively, rap was explained with the elements of the drum and pictures in this .
Also, though existing researches deal with primarily different kinds of rhymes, it would be more useful to explain how to locate the rhymes when writing a rap. This presents a chart that shows fifteen different locations for rhyme and visualizes the structure of a rap through explaining the lyrics of an existing rap song as an example.
In this research , marking breathing points, kick, hi-hat, and snare of the drum are presented as a method of analyzing a rap song practically. And different kinds of flow are explained through pictures and numbers. Also the methods are analyzed and compared through applying them to existing rap songs. Through that, this research is found to be a practical experiment that is necessary for analyzing the structure of a rap and writing a rap song.
