The purpose of this study is to examine acquisition aspect of Korean pronunciation due to the period of stay and proficiency of Vietnamese learners. The correct communication premises exact pronunciation. The study on education for pronunciation is not carried out many in Korean language education though it is very important. Particularly the study on the pronunciation of Vietnamese takes minority comparing to other language groups even though the number of Vietnamese is as big as third of all foreign stayers. So this thesis is to examine the aspect of Korean pronunciation acquisition of Vietnamese.
First of all, the theme of this thesis was set by explaining the need and purpose of it and reviewing precedent studies in chapter I. The theme of this study is to know if the proficiency and period of stay exist as variables in acquisition of Korean pronunciation for Vietnamese learners.
The theoretical background to solve this was explained in chapter II. First of all, the consonant system of Vietnamese and Korean were compared, and then phonological phenomena of Vietnamese and Korean were also compared. This content was written particularly considering about which part among Korean consonant and phonological phenomena Vietnamese learners may feel more difficult. Then the influence of staying period on acquisition of second language was searched.
In chapter III, the aspect of acquiring pronunciation of Vietnamese learners was examined, and the experiment was designed to see if the proficiency and staying period are exist as variables and appropriate questionnaires were consisted for it. The experiment was designed with three steps of drawing up of questionnaire with 20 questions for basic information check up, proficiency test and pronunciation experiment, and the experimental questionnaire has 20 questions for proficiency and 20 sentences which include 66 experimental words for pronunciation. The experiment has been carried out with 58 Vietnamese learners who are studying Korean at language schools of universities in Seoul area and Korean classes affiliated with social organizations.
And then the results of the experiment was analyzed and described in chapter IV. The result shows that, for the aspect of consonant pronunciation, the most difficult pronunciation for vietnamese learners are alveolus fricative /ㅅ/, /ㅆ/ among all Korean consonants which are triple opposition in experimental questions. And for the phonological phenomena, the error rate is high in all experimental phonological phenomena, particularly the phonological phenomena with highest error rate was nasalization, and the error rate of double final consonant is higher than that of single final consonant in liaison rule.
For the proficiency variable of the study theme 1, the result of comparison of the error rate of pronunciation of the consonants and phonological phenomena between 29 people of the Vietnamese learner in beginner level and 29 people of those of middle level shows that the proficiency exists as a variable in acquiring pronunciation.
For the variable of staying period of the study theme 2, the result of the comparison of the error rate of the pronunciation of the consonants and phonological phenomena between three groups of 17 Vietnamese of staying less than 1~3 years, 20 of staying less than 3~5 years and 19 of staying more than 5years shows that staying period doesn’t exist as a variable.
The cleared result of the study was summarized and the meaning and its limitation were prescribed in chapter V.
I could confirm, through this study, the consonant system between Korean and Vietnamese are so different from each other, and because of it, various errors occurred in pronunciation of consonants and phonological phenomena by Vietnamese learners.
Considering these, this result implies the Vietnamese learners must acquire consonants pronunciation through systemic and visible reference, and they have to pay attention to and study about phonological phenomena from the beginning. And this study suggested that educators must teach phonological phenomena from easier ones to difficult level step by step in teaching Korean.
Giving an overview of the aspect of acquiring pronunciation of the Vietnamese learners, this study has a meaning of the examination about staying period variable which was not studied so far as a variable for acquisition of the pronunciation of the Vietnamese learners.
And this study disclosed that if the proficiency and the staying period exist as variables in acquisition of the pronunciation through objective analysis.
