Both address forms and reference forms are crucial elements in social interactions, which define social relations between the participants in the conversation. However, due to the vertical social structure and the influence of Confucianism culture, the address form and reference form in Korean language are much more complicated in its forms and usages compared to other languages. Therefore, along with relative honorification forms, most foreigners find it very difficult to understand when learning Korean.
Especially for the marriage-based immigrants, who are placed in a unique social environment, it is even more challenging to understand the address form and reference form in Korean language. This is due to the fact that marriage-based immigrants become engaged in a variety of relationships as soon as they immigrate to Korea. In particular, the complex relationships with the relatives of their spouses make it more burdensome for them to learn and use such forms correctly.
The number of marriage-based immigrants from Vietnam has been consistently increasing. According to the statistics released by KIS (Korea Immigration Service), as of the end of December 2012, about 26.5% of the entire marriage-based immigrants in Korea are from Vietnam, which is the highest among all the other nationalities. Therefore, further studies on the address form and reference form in Korean Language need to be carried out in order to promote fluent communications between native Korean speakers and the marriage-based immigrants from Vietnam.
This study aims to explore the incorrect usage patterns of the address form and reference form in Korean language and to analyze the causes of such errors.
Specific details of each chapter are as follows.
Chapter 1 states the purpose and necessity of this study and explores other studies that have been carried out on the similar subject. It also describes the methods and range of research used in this study.
Chapter 2 analyzes the theoretical background of the address form and reference form in the order of theories, errors, and analysis of errors. In Chapter 2, I defined the concepts and functions of the address form and reference form based on previous studies and conducted comparative analysis (between Korean and Vietnamese) on its forms and selecting factors. Then I stated the definition of error, described error patterns according to various causes, and provided 3 typical error analysis theories.
Chapter 3 provides methods of research in the order of the subject of research, research procedures, criteria for errors, and error description methods. Media analysis and in-depth interviews were conducted in pursuance of investigating incorrect usages of the address form and reference form among the marriage-based immigrants from Vietnam. As for media analysis, 15 episodes of a show broadcast by KBS—LoveinAsia—were analyzed. I examined the address form and reference form used in the conversations among the marriage-based immigrants from Vietnam. Also, I interviewed 4 marriage-based immigrants from Vietnam, who reside in Gwangju Metropolitan City and Gyeonggi area, as well as people around them.
In Chapter 4, I divided the errors found in the previous chapter into linguistic factors and social factors. I then categorized linguistic factors into between-language factors and within-language factors. As for social factors, I specified it into intimacy determinants, age determinants, social status determinants, formality determinants, and relative relation determinants.
Chapter 5 summarizes the overall contents of this study, and states the significance and limitations of this study. This study is significant for it investigates the error patterns of the address form and reference form in Korean language by analyzing the actual conversations of marriage-based immigrants from Vietnam, and it also analyzes their causes from the points of linguistic factors and social factors. The subjects of the research were marriage-based immigrants from Vietnam and the native Korean speakers around them, and with the assistance of media analysis and in-depth interviews, we were able to analyze the grammatical errors that Vietnamese immigrants make in their everyday life, which makes this study more realistic. We also analyzed the causes of the errors and specified them into linguistic factors and social factors.
I hope further studies on the address form and reference form in Korean language will continue to be carried out and be of much help to the marriage-based immigrants in improving their ability to communicate.
