A Study on Spatial Adjectives in Modern Korean

The study is on spatial adjectives, analyzing semantic structure of polysemy words. Based on this, the intends to point out the inner relationship between semantic system of spatial adjectives and the meaning of spatial adjectives.
It is not easy to grasp the meaning of adjectives like spatial adjectives about their nature because the meaning of vocabularies is determined by the extension of the vocabularies and the meaning that adjectives deliver is not essentially any entity but is 'attribute, status properties' of the entity, so it is difficult to confirm the extension. The meaning of adjectives is confirmed by the nouns that can be combined with adjectives, because it will be determined by the category of the meaning of nouns which can be combined with semantic features of the meaning of adjectives. In this study, the meaning of spatial adjectives are grasped according to noun entries which go with spatial adjectives.
The following discussion should be preceded in order to analyze the meaning of spatial adjectives. Spatial adjectives are in the vocabulary category based on 'spatiality', and every spatial adjective has the common features, at the same time has the distinctive feature. These features play a very important role in identifying the meaning of spatial adjectives and their relationship, so an understanding of attributes spatial adjectives of should be made with priority. The meaning of vocabularies are bound to be extended based on the basic meaning. The boundaries between basic meaning and extended meaning must be decided properly in order to identify the patterns of extended meaning of spatial adjectives and what is the category of basic meaning of spatial adjectives should be discussed. In Chapter 2, the attributes of spatial adjectives and is the category of basic meaning are defined and it gives the foundation for analyzing the meaning of spatial adjectives.
In Chapter 3, the semantic structure of polysemy of each individual spatial adjectives is divided into the basic meaning and extended meaning and analyzed in detail. First, of the basic meaning of spatial adjectives are d related to of human's in space. The extending patterns of the basic meaning are identified according to the meaning category of noun entries. The result of analysis is that the meaning of each individual spatial adjectives doesn't exist independently and is conceptually related to each other, especially the extended meaning constitutes semantic field by this kind of conceptual relations. The whole semantic field of spatial adjectives are different one another but they have commonness so that individual spatial adjectives could be related as one semantic field. From this, we can see that there are relations among individual spatial adjectives.
In Chapter 4, based on the semantic structure of polysemy of each individual spatial adjectives in Chapter 3, the system of the basic meaning and expanding of the overall spatial adjectives is examined. In the basic semantic system, the inner relations with the basic meaning of each individual spatial adjectives are analyzed, and in expanding semantic system, focusing on analyzed semantic field, the position of individual spatial adjectives and inner relations are analyzed.
There are two significances in this study. One is that the study of spatial adjectives is extended to the overall semantic field, which only discussed about the nature of spatial adjectives. The other is that the position and relations of spatial adjectives are investigated in the whole semantic system of spatial adjectives, which only identified the meaning of individual spatial adjectives.

본 연구는 공간형용사를 대상으로 각 개별 공간형용사의 다의 의미 구조를 분석하고 이를 토대로 전반 공간형용사의 의미 체계 및 공간형용사들 사이의 의미의 내적인 관련성을 밝히는 것을 목적으로 한다.
공간형용사를 비롯한 형용사는 그 특성상 의미 파악이 쉽지 않다. 왜냐하면 어휘의 의미는 그 어휘의 외연에 의해 결정되는데 형용사가 전달하는 의미는 본질적으로 어떤 실체가 아니라 실체의 ‘속성, 상태, 성질’ 등과 같은 것이어서 그 외연을 뚜렷하게 확정하기 어렵기 때문이다. 형용사의 의미는 결합할 수 있는 명사에 의지하여 확인할 수 있는데 이는 형용사의 의미 자질이 결합할 수 있는 명사의 의미 부류에 근거하여 파악될 수 있기 때문이다. 본 연구에서는 공간형용사의 의미를 공간형용사와 어울려 쓰이는 명사항에 근거하여 파악하였다.
공간형용사의 의미를 분석하기 위해서는 다음과 같은 논의가 선행되어야 한다. 공간형용사는 ‘공간성’을 바탕으로 형성된 어휘 범주로 각 공간형용사는 공통적인 속성을 지니는 동시에 서로 다른 변별적 속성을 지닌다. 이들 속성은 공간형용사의 의미 및 그 관련성을 파악하는데 있어서 매우 중요한 역할을 하므로 공간형용사의 속성에 대한 이해가 우선적으로 이루어져야 한다. 어휘의 의미는 기본 의미를 토대로 확장되기 마련이다. 공간형용사의 의미 확장 양상을 제대로 파악하기 위해서는 기본 의미와 확장 의미의 경계가 제대로 확정되어야 하고 이를 위해서는 공간형용사의 기본 의미 범주가 무엇인지에 대한 논의가 이루어져야 한다. 2장에서는 공간형용사의 속성 및 그 기본 의미 범주를 밝혀 공간형용사의 의미를 분석하기 위한 토대를 마련하였다.
3장에서는 각 개별 공간형용사의 다의 의미 구조를 기본 의미와 확장 의미로 나누어 구체적으로 분석하였다. 우선 각 개별 공간형용사의 기본 의미의 대립 관계를 인간이 공간에 대한 인지 방식과 관련지어 체계화하였고 그 기본 의미가 확장되어 가는 양상은 공간형용사의 속성 및 관련 명사항의 의미 부류에 근거하여 파악하였다. 분석 결과 각 개별 공간형용사의 의미는 독립적으로 존재하는 것이 아니라 개념적으로 서로 연관되어 있었고 특히 확장 의미는 이러한 개념적 연관성에 의해 서로 다른 몇 개의 의미장을 이루고 있었다. 이런 각 개별 공간형용사들의 전반 의미장은 서로 다르기도 하지만 공통성도 지니고 있어 개별 공간형용사들이 하나의 의미장으로 서로 연결되어 있는 모습을 보이고 있었다. 이는 개별 공간형용사들 간에 의미적인 관련성이 있음을 잘 보여준다.
4장에서는 3장의 공간형용사 다의 의미 구조 분석을 토대로 전반 공간형용사의 기본 의미 체계와 확장 의미 체계를 살펴보았다. 기본 의미 체계에서는 각 개별공간형용사의 기본 의미들이 맺고 있는 내적인 관련성을 중심으로 분석하였고 확장 의미 체계에서는 개별 공간형용사에서 분석된 의미장을 중심으로 각 의미장에서의 개별 공간형용사들의 위치 및 그들의 내적인 관련성을 분석하였다.
본 연구는 그동안 공간형용사의 속성에 대한 논의에만 머물러 있던 공간형용사의 연구를 그 전반 의미 영역에 대한 연구로 확대시켰다는 점, 개별 공간형용사의 의미 파악으로만 그친 것이 아니라 전반 공간형용사의 어휘 체계 속에서 이들의 위치와 관계를 규명하였다는 점에서 의의가 있다.
