본 연구의 목적은 고등학생들의 독해실력 향상을 위한 문학작품의 활용 가능성과 교육적 가치를 알아보고 문학작품 중에서도 영미단편소설을 활용하여 효율적인 독해 지도방안을 제시하는... 본 연구의 목적은 고등학생들의 독해실력 향상을 위한 문학작품의 활용 가능성과 교육적 가치를 알아보고 문학작품 중에서도 영미단편소설을 활용하여 효율적인 독해 지도방안을 제시하는 데 있다. 연구대상은 서울·경기 소재의 고등학교 2학년 학생 334명이며, 이들을 대상으로 문학작품을 활용한 영어수업에 대한 인식과 영미단편소설 선정기준을 알아보고 이를 바탕으로 작품을 선정하였다. 또한 선정된 O. Henry의「The Mammon and the Archer」의 교육적 가치를 살펴본 후에 독해실력 향상을 위한 영어 독해지도방안을 제시하였다. 연구에 대한 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 고등학교 2학년의 학습자들은 문학작품을 활용한 영어수업에 대해 필요성과 흥미도에 있어서 긍정적인 반응이었다. 이에 반해 교과서 내의 문학작품 활용 단원 활동에 대해서는 상대적으로 긍정적인 답변이 낮아지며 교과서의 활동들에 대한 개선이 필요함을 알 수 있었다. 둘째, 수업시간에 활용하는 영미단편소설 선정기준에 대해 고등학교 2학년 학습자들은 어휘 및 문법수준을 가장 중요한 기준이라고 하였으며, 작품의 주제 및 소재, 작품의 문화적 배경 등도 고려해야 한다고 하였다. 이와 함께 다양한 선정기준을 참고하여 선정된 O. Henry의「The Mammon and the Archer」작품은 이미 고등학교 2학년 학습자들에 익숙한 O. Henry 작가의 작품이며 주제 또한 고등학교 2학년 학습자들이 흥미있는 주제로 선택한 “돈과 사랑”에 관한 것이다. 이 작품은 간결한 플롯과 단순한 인물 및 배경요소가 특징으로 어휘 및 문법 난이도가 높지 않아 언어 학습자료로 수업시간에 활용하기에 적합하다. 또한 작품의 등장인물의 성격과 인간상에 대한 묘사는 학습자들에게 올바른 인간상을 확립할 수 있는 기회를 줄 수 있다. 셋째, 독해실력 향상을 위한 영미단편소설의 영어수업 지도방안을 제시하기 위하여 읽기 전, 읽기 중, 읽기 후 3단계로 나누어 학습자들의 학습동기를 자극하고 학습자 배움 중심으로 진행되는 활동들을 제안하였다. 읽기 전 활동은 작품의 배경을 통한 전반적인 이해와 학습자들의 흥미유발을 위한 예측하기 활동, 사전 어휘학습 활동들을 제시하였다. 읽기 중 활동은 작품을 본격적으로 이해하기 위해 스토리 파악을 위한 활동들과 문맥을 통해 어휘를 익히고 작품 속의 주요 문법적 지식을 학습할 수 있도록 하였다. 읽기 후 활동은 말하기와 쓰기 영역의 확장 활동들을 함께 구성하여 통합적 영어실력 향상에 도움을 주고자 하였다.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the possibility of using literary works and the educational value and to suggest effective reading skills through reading English short stories for reading competence improvement of high school learners. The research subjects are 292 learners in high schools located in Seoul and Gyeonggido. This study has examined the awareness of English class using literary works and selection standards of English short stories with research subjects. Based on these results, this study has suggested O. Henry「The Mammon and the Archer」for English reading teaching skills to improve English reading competence. The results in this study are as follows: First, it has found that high school second grade learners have positive attitudes for English class using literary works. On the other hands, they have negative attitudes for the activities of the lessons with literary works in the English textbook relatively. Therefore, it has to be revised the activities of the lessons with literary works in the English textbook. Second, high school second grade learners think the level of vocabulary and grammar are important to use English short stories during English class. Based on the all the results and diverse selection standards, O. Henry「The Mammon and the Archer」is selected for this study. The important features of this story are concise flot, simple main characters and background factors. Also, the level of vocabulary and grammar is not that high so that it is useful for language learning materials during English class. Third, in order to suggest English lesson plans of English short stories for reading competence improvement, the activities that can stimulate learners' motivation and are learners' learning centered are divided into three steps. The pre-reading activities are designed to understand the texts through background of stories as well as to cause learners' interest with predicting activities. The learners can also do advance vocabulary activities in the first step. In the during-reading activities, it is comprised of story understanding activities, vocabulary understanding activities through contexts and grammatical knowledge learning activities.
