근대 국어와 현대 국어의 교량적 역할을 하고 있는 개화기 국어는 앞 시대의 전통적인 표기 양상을 보이면서도 새로운 표기 형식을 취하고 있다. 개화기 당시의 외국어는 다양한 방식에 의해 유입되었는데, 이러한 외국어가 국어의 다양한 제약 현상과 국어학적 조건에 어떻게 적용되고 변용되었는지를 밝히는 것은 중요한 작업이라 할 수 있다.
본 연구는 개화기 최초의 한글 신문 『독립신문』에 나타난 외국어 어휘 표기 가운데 영어 어휘를 중심으로 개화기 당시의 외국어 표기 전반을 살피고자 하였다. 그리고 영어음과 국어의 음운이 어떻게 대응되고 있는가를 살펴보았다.
이에 1장에서는 본 연구의 대상을 발음이나 의미적인 면에서 순수한 모습을 보이는 외국어로 한정하였다. 그리고 2장에서는 『독립신문』의 기본적인 표기 방식을 검토하고, 『독립신문』의 외국어 표기가 영어의 원음에 가까운 이유를 설명하였다. 3장에서는 개화기 국어 자음의 자소 체계와 그 음운 체계에 대해서 검토함과 동시에, 개화기와 현대 영어 시기의 자음 체계를 살펴보고 그 차이점에 대해 알아보았다. 이러한 내용을 근거로 삼아서 4장에서는『독립신문』에서 나타난 외국어 표기를 통해 이들의 영어음과 국어의 음운 대응을 알아보았다. 그리고 『독립신문』의 외국어 표기를 출현 위치와 조음 방법에 따라 나누어 영어음과 국어 음운의 대응 양상을 살펴보았다. 또한 이러한 대응 양상을 다양한 음운론적 기제에 의해서 설명하고자 노력하였다. 결론에서는 앞의 논의를 요약하고 남은 문제에 대해 언급하였다.

Korean language of the civilization period which plays bridge role of modern Korean language and contemporary Korean language is taking a new writing system while it has traditional notational aspects of the previous era. Foreign languages have been introduced in various ways at the times of civilization period and it is important task to find out how they are applied and transformed to the variety of limited conditions imposed by Korean language and Korean linguistic conditions.
This study was conducted to examine overall notations of the foreign languages at the times of civilization period by specifically focussing on English vocabulary among foreign vocabulary notations appeared in 『Dongnipsinmun』, the first Korean news published in the civilization period. In addition, we have also examined how English phoneme and Korean phoneme correspond to each other.
Therefore, in Chapter 1, we limited the subject of this study to foreign language having pure form in terms of pronunciation and meaning. In Chapter 2, we reviewed the basic writing system in the『Dongnipsinmun』and explained the reason why foreign writing system of 『Dongnipsinmun』 are close to the original sound of English language. In Chapter 3. while we reviewed consonants and vowels system and phonological system of Korean language in the civilization period, we have examined at the same time consonant system of civilization period and contemporary period, and found out the differences. Based on this information, in Chapter 4, we have found out how these phonemes of the English language and Korean language correspond to each other through examining foreign language notations appeared in 『Dongnipsinmun』. Thus, we divided foreign language notations used in 『Dongnipsinmun』 by apperance location and articulation method, and examined aspects of how English phoneme and Korean phoneme correspond to each other. In addition, we tried to explain these aspects of correspondence by various phonological mechanisms. Lastly, the conclusion summarized the previous discussions and discussed the remaining issues.
