이 연구는 초등 학생을 대상으로 하여 국어 단어 형성법(word-formation)을 통한 어휘력 신장 지도 방안을 모색하는 데에 목적이 있다.
언어에 관심을 가지는 비전문가가 대하는 최초의 대상은 제일 먼저 단어이며, 단어를 풍부하게 만드는 가장 생산적인 방법은 합성법과 파생법이라고 할 수 있다. 그리고 이러한 단어 형성에 관한 기초 지식을 알면 다음으로 조어력이 강한 어휘를 배움으로써 많은 어휘를 효과적으로 학습할 수 있게 된다.
그리하여 본고에서는 어휘력 신장에 도움이 되는 단어 형성법 지도 프로그램을 구안하여 그 효과를 검증하고자 하였다.
연구자가 구안한 단어 형성법을 통한 어휘력 신장 지도 프로그램은 크게 개관 단계, 파생어 지도 단계, 합성어 지도 단계, 실제 단계 등의 4단계로 나누어진다.
먼저, 개관 단계는 단어 형성법에 관한 전반적인 기초 개념을 파악하는 단계로 낱말의 짜임 구조화하기, 토의하기, 국어 사전 활용하기 등의 방법이 있다. '낱말의 짜임 구조화하기'는 낱말의 짜임을 설명하는 글을 제시해 주고 주어진 학습지에 낱말의 짜임을 구조화하는 것이며, '토의하기'는 학생들이 조별로 토의하며 주어진 낱말 카드들을 낱말의 짜임에 따라 분류하는 것이다. 그리고 '국어 사전 활용하기'는 프로그램 전반에서 유용하게 쓰이는 학습 방법이다.
둘째, 파생어 지도 단계에서는 글자판 만들어 덧붙는 말익히기, 덧붙는 말 사전 만들기, 노래 가사 바꾸어 부르기 등의 방법을 활용할 수 있다. '글자판 만들어 덧붙는 말익히기'는 접두사 혹은 접미사의 낱말 카드를 제시하고, 알맞은 뜻 카드를 서로 연결짓게 하는 방법이며 '덧붙는 말 사전 만들기'는 작은 공책을 준비하여 각 장마다 위 부분에는 덧붙는 말과 그에 대한 정의를 적고, 아래 부분에는 짧은 글짓기를 하는 것이다. 그리고 '노래 가사 바꾸어 부르기'는 가령, '릿자로 끝나는 말은'이라는 노래에 '(접미사)로 끝나는 말은'으로 바꾸어 부를 수 있다.
셋째, 합성어 지도 단계에서는 '낱말밭 만들기', '연상장 만들기' 등의 방법이 있다. '낱말밭 만들기'는 '빙고놀이'와 비슷하며 놀이를 통하여 많은 복합어들을 생산할 수 있는 장점이 있다. 그리고 '연상장 만들기'는 낱말의 수를 늘리는 데 도움을 주며 낱말과 낱말의 연결 방식을 보여준다.
넷째, 실제 단계에서는 이름짓기, 외래어를 고유어로 바꾸기, 단어 형성법을 활용하여 글 쓰기 등이 있다. '이름짓기'는 단어 형성법을 통해 여러 가지 생활 용어를 만드는 것이며, '외래어를 고유어로 바꾸기'는 외래어를 단어 형성법을 통하여 고유어로 바꾸어 보는 활동이다. 그리고 '단어 형성법을 활용하여 글 쓰기'는 단어 형성법 지도 프로그램의 마지막 단계로서 단어 형성법으로 만들어진 복합어들을 사용하여 글을 쓰는 것이다.
연구자는 위의 단어 형성법 지도 프로그램이 어휘력 신장에 도움이 되었는지를 알아보기 위해 초등 학교 6학년 남녀 어린이 68명을 대상으로 실험을 실시하였다. 이 중에서 34명으로 구성된 한 반을 실험 집단으로 정하고 단어 형성법을 통한 어휘력 신장 지도 프로그램에 따라 지도하였으며, 다른 한 반은 통제 집단으로 정하고 아무런 처치를 가하지 않았다. 실험 집단과 통제 집단은 사전 검사에 비해 사후 검사 결과, 평균과 표준 편차 등에 있어 그 격차가 의미있는 수준으로 벌어졌다. 따라서 위의 단어 형성법 지도 프로그램이 초등 학교 6학년 학생들의 어휘력 신장에 도움을 주었음을 알 수 있다.
이 연구는 국어 어휘를 효과적으로 학습할 수 있게 해 주는 단어 형성에 관한 기초 지식을 초등 학교 6학년 학생들이 배우기 쉽게 교수-학습 방법을 고안하였다는데에 그 의의를 찾을 수 있다.

The recent study was designed to present an effective method of teaching lexical competence based on the word formation for korean higher-grade elementary school students.
It is a word that a man, who is not major in language but is interested in language, come in contact with first object.
A method of compound and derivation are the best productive word formation and students can know many word effectively if they should learn an elementary knowledge of word formation.
With this purpose, this study was intended to design word formation teaching program which give lexical competence and test its effectiveness.
This program was divided into the four stage, which is a general survey, the teaching of compound and dervation and practice.
At first, the general basic idea was grasped in the general survey stage and this stage have a method of the word structure, discussion and the korean dictionary. A method of the word structure makes students analyze the word structure. A method of the discussion is that students discuss by team and divide cards into word structure. Korean dictionary is a very useful method in this program.
Second, the stage of derivation teaching have a method of learning affix, making affix dictionary, and singing the text of a song variably and so on. A method learning affix is to present affix card and link a modest word card and 'Making affix dictionary' is to write an affix and its definition in the upper portion and write a composition in the lower portion at the prepared small notebook.
Third, the stage of compound word teaching can be applied by use of making a wordbook and making an association. 'Making a wordbook' is like a bingo game and has a merit to make many compounds by the play. And 'Making an association' is useful to extend vocabulary and it is a method to link word and word.
Fourth, the stage of actual teaching can be applied by use of giving a name, changing a foreign word for korean language, and word formation. 'Giving a name' is to make various practical words by use of the word formation and 'Changing a foreign word for korean language' is to replace a foreign word with korean language by use of the word formation. And 'Composition by use of word formation' is to form a sentence by use of a compound word made of word formation, which is the last step of word formation teaching program.
This study made an experiment with 68 elementary schoolchild in the sixth grade whether to be useful for an extensive lexical competence by use of the word formation. This study made an experiment group consisted of 34 elementary schoolchild to be guided by the program and a controlled group consisted of the others to be not guided by program. As a result, there was a great difference in the average and the standard deviation between an experiment group and a controlled group.
This study also finds its significance in that it presents a lexical competence program based on the word formation, by which students are understood korean word formation effectively and extended lexical competence.
