본 논고의 목적은 무속을 한국어 교육 내의 문화 교수요목으로서의 맥락으로 다루기 위한 효과적이면서 흥미로운 교수방법을 구상하는 동시에 학습자에게 무속의 개념을 정확하게 전달하는 데 있다. 영어권 모어 학습자의 경우 서구의 대중문화에서 비롯된 이미지와 관념에 의해 무속에 대해 고정관념을 가질 가능성이 있다.
제 2장에서는 문화의 정의를 살피고 외국어 교육 내에서 활용될 수 있는 적용가능성을 논의한다. ‘문화 간 의사소통 능력’이야말로 외국어 교실에서의 문화 교육의 주요한 지향점임을 고려하여 본 연구는 문화교육에서의 구체적인 교육적 목표에 대해 논한다.
제 3장에서는 샤머니즘과 네오 샤머니즘, 그리고 무속을 소개하며, 특히 논쟁적인 용어로서의 ‘무속’을 정의하고자 한다. 본 논고의 목적 중 하나는 학습자들에게 ‘무속’의 이해는 단지 ‘한국의 샤머니즘’이라는 번역어 이상의 범위를 수반함을 이해하게끔 하는 데 있다. 이러한 의미에서 본 연구는 한국의 ‘무속’과 네오 샤머니즘을 비교함으로써 서구 출신의 영어권 학습자들에게 무속이라는 개념을 이해하는 데 어떠한 어려움이 있는지 설명하고자 하였다. 본 연구에서 네오 샤머니즘을 언급하는 것은 샤머니즘에 대한 서구적인 과점에서의 이해를 언급하고자 함이지 교육과정에서의 목표 자체로 삼고자 함은 아니다.
제 4장에서는 한국어 교육학의 문화 교수요목에서 무속이 가지는 잠재적 가치를 언급하며 현재까지 다양한 한국어 교육학 내의 맥락에서 다루어진 무속관련 자료를 평가한다. 본 연구는 무속은 한국의 예술전통과 정신문화에 깊숙이 연관된 구전 종교로 기능함을 주장한다. 그러나 실제 교육자료에서 보여진 무속은 그 문화적 함의를 상실하고 단지 ‘굿’이라는 제의에 연관되어 나타날 뿐이다.
제 5장에서는 무속을 주요 주제로 삼아 한국어 학습자를 위한 교육 과정을 설계하였다. 교육 방안 구성 시 학습자에게 흥미를 유발시킬 수 있는 적절한 방법으로 무속을 제시하고, 학습자의 문화 간 의사소통 능력을 신장시킬 자료를 개발할 것을 목적으로 삼는다.

This study aims to make the case for including ‘Musok’ (Korean shamanism) in the cultural curriculum of Korean as a Foreign Language (KFL) education and to devise methods of instruction that are both interesting and effective and which depict ‘Musok’ accurately and thoroughly. In approaching ‘Musok,’ native English speakers from western countries can pose specific issues due to pre-conceptions of shamanism they may have based on images and conceptions derived from western popular culture.
Chapter two examines the definition(s) of culture and specifically working definitions of culture applicable to foreign language education. Having established ‘intercultural communication ability’ as one of the key large-scale goals of cultural education in the foreign language classroom this study then examines specific educational objectives of cultural education.
Section three introduces shamanism, neo-shamanism and ‘Musok.’ Shamanism, particularity in defining ‘Musok,’ is a contentious term. Thus one aim of this study is to provide students with an understanding of ‘Musok’ that extends beyond its relatively simplified translation: ‘Korean shamanism.’ Continuing in this vein, this study compares the tenants of Korean ‘Musok’ with neo-shamanism in an effort to elucidate further what difficulties English speakers of western origin may have in conceptualizing ‘Musok.’ This study addresses neo-shamanism as a window into western conceptions of shamanism rather than a subject of comparison applied in the educational process itself.
In section four, this study addresses the potential value of ‘Musok’ in the KFL cultural curriculum and assesses the frequency and quality of its current presentation in various KFL texts. This study argues that ‘Musok’ folk religion is deeply interwoven together with Korean artistic and spiritual culture. However, this study shows that ‘Musok’ and specifically ‘Kut’ are under-represented in the KFL text and are not treated as having great relevance to Korea’s cultural makeup.
In section five this study puts forth an educational plan to be used in presenting ‘Musok’ to KFL learners. It seeks to offer instruction that while engaging, accurate and thorough is also useful to the learner in their Korean language development and in their development as intercultural speakers. This plan is tested in a mock class, the results of which are used to foresee problem areas and suggest solutions.
Section six includes a summary of the above sections and goes on to address this study's limitations and to offer suggestions for future directions in related research.
