본 연구는 영어 수동문이 우리말로 번역되는 양상을 대조언어학적 관점에서 조명하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 이를 위해 이론적 배경에서 첫 번째, 영어 수동태에서 수동태의 기능과 영어에서 능동태를 수동태로 변경하지 못하는 경우를 정리한다. 두 번째, 한국어 피동 구문에서는 한국어 피동의 정의와 성립 요건에 대해 알아보고, 한국어 피동 범주를 두 가지로 나누어 살펴본다. 세 번째, 영어의 수동, 한국어의 피동 구문의 공통점과 차이점을 알고, 이가 수동문 번역에 대해 가지는 함의를 논한다. 번역문의 분석 및 논의에서는 Mitch Albom의 Tuesdays with Morrie 외 3권과 각각의 한국어 번역본에서 추출한 영어 수동문과 우리말 번역문을 대상으로 수동문이 우리말 피동문으로 번역되는 경우에는 언어 규범상 피동문을 지양하는 한국어에서 어떤 형태의 피동문으로 번역되는지 살펴보고, 능동문으로 번역되는 경우에는 목표텍스트에서 원천텍스트의 주어 유지 여부와 원천텍스트의 타동사 술어 번역의 다양화에 따라 번역 양상의 세분화를 시도한다.
본 연구 결과의 핵심은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 영어 수동문을 우리말 피동문으로 번역할 때는 우리말 피동 쓰임에 맞게 번역하여 이중 피동문과 같은 어색한 번역문을 생산해서는 안 된다. 둘째, 영어 수동문을 우리말 능동문으로 번역할 때는 우리말의 주어 생략과 주제 구문과 같은 특성을 잘 살리고 자동사, 형용사, 타동사, 명사 등으로 술어의 다양화를 꾀하여 목표텍스트 독자들이 번역문을 읽을 때 비번역문을 읽을 때와 같이 자연스러움을 느낄 수 있도록 해야 한다. 이를 위해 바꿔쓰기, 생략과 같은 전문 번역 전략도 고려해 보아야 한다.
본고는 전문 번역가들의 번역사례 분석을 통해 번역학도와 초보 번역자가 영어 수동문과 관련한 번역상의 문제 해결 전략을 모색하는 데 도움을 주고자 한다. 앞으로 영어와 우리말의 구조적 차이와 관련한 문제를 해결하기 위한 번역 이론과 기법에 대한 다양한 연구가 이루어지기를 기대한다.

This thesis seeks to investigate how to translate English passive structures into Korean by analyzing and discussing Korean translations of passive structures extracted from Mitch Albom’s Tuesdays with Morrie, Nora Ephron’s I Feel Bad about My Neck and Other Thoughts on Being a Woman, Sophie Kinsella’s Confessions of a Shopaholic, and Marlo Morgan’s Mutant Message Down Under.
The research questions of this study are: 1) in the case of English passive structures being translated into Korean passive structures, how does the translation look according to the Korean passive rules?; and 2) in the case of English passive structures being translated into Korean active structures, what are the types of predicates into which the transitive verbs in the source text change?
The points of this study are: 1) in the case of English passive structures being translated into Korean passive structures, understanding the accurate Korean passive rules should precede so that inappropriate expressions like a double passive expression might not be produced; and 2) in the case of English passive structures being translated into Korean active structures, a substitution of diverse Korean predicates for English transitive verbs should be considered for better readability. Hopefully, this study will contribute to giving some clues to those who are having trouble translating English passives into Korean.
