This study is aimed to look at the distribution in language learning styles and strategies for Korean language learners and increase the efficiency of teaching and learning by analyzing the correlation between learning styles and strategies. To that end, the learner’s learning styles and strategies by the first language was surveyed through questionnaire and after controlling the learner’s linguistic area to Chinese, difference in learning styles and strategies by the learner’s individual difference was analyzed. Besides, after analyzing the correlation between learning style and strategy, specific practical uses of learning style and strategy appearing in the process of Korean language learning were investigated through qualitative research.
To analyze the learning styles and strategies of Korean language learners, a survey was conducted on the subject of 139 learners using Chinese, English and Japanese as their first language who were attending a language education institution in Seoul. There were 60 learners who controlled their first language to Chinese. For analysis of learning styles, Oxford’s (1993a) Style Analysis Survey (SAS) was used, and for learning strategy, Oxford’s (1990) Strategy Inventory for Language Learning (SILL) was used as measuring instrument. For data analysis, descriptive statistics, t-test, one-way ANOVA and correlation were conducted using SPSS 21, while conducting post-hoc test in case there is a significant difference. Besides, to complement the limitations of quantitative research, qualitative interview was conducted to look into specific aspects of practical use. For interview, three learners with each in different gender, proficiency, learning purpose, etc. were selected among learners from Chinese speaking countries. This was done to investigate what difference would appear in learning style and strategy in practical use by specific variables when language area is controlled to learners from Chinese speaking countries.
The results of this study are as follows:
First, as a result of analyzing learning styles, there was a significant difference in visual, auditory, openness-oriented and global styles by the first language of Korean language learners. Such result indicates that teaching and learning Korean should be made in differentiation by the first language of learners.
Besides, the result of analyzing difference in learning styles by the learner’s individual difference on the subjects of learners from Chinese speaking countries shows a significant difference by their gender, age, learning purpose and proficiency. This means that the process of teaching and learning Korean should consider the variables of the learner’s individual difference.
Result of analyzing the learning strategies showed a significant difference in the use of cognitive strategy and affective strategy of learners by the language area. Such result emphasizes the need for differentiated teaching and learning Korean by the learner’s first language.
Also, as a result of analyzing difference in the learner’s learning strategies by individual difference on the subject of learners in Chinese language area, there was a significant difference found in learning strategy by their gender, age, learning purpose and proficiency. Such result indicates there should be a proper guide on learning strategy by individual difference for practical use of effective language learning strategy.
Besides, by analyzing the correlation between learning styles and strategies, this study proved there is generally a positive correlation between all learning styles and strategy styles. Also, through a qualitative interview to learn about specific aspects told that there is a close association for Korean language learners between their learning styles and learning strategies. Also, by the area of speaking, hearing, reading and writing in learning the Korean language, one’s preferred learning styles and strategies can vary with a close association between learners’ propensity and the style and teaching method of the language training institution he attends.
Based on this study, there must be researches made using diverse methods of investigation including observation, think-aloud, retrospective , retrospective journals, class discussion, etc. which will tell the aspects of actual learning style and strategy appearing in the learning process. There is a need for study on the effect of guiding learning style and strategy and developing diverse programs for guiding these. Furthermore, there should be follow-ups to develop the study tools suited for the specific situation of learning the Korean language.
