The aim of this study is to help Myanmar learners of Korean to study its linguistic appearances and characteristics of the address terms more efficiently and easily. The number of Myanmar learners of Korean grows increasingly nowadays and their passion for learning also develops everyday, but compared to the current situation, relevant learning materials and students’ learning conditions are somewhat poor. Concerning interpretation of fundamental concepts of Korean basic elements like address terms, most Korean language textbooks available in Myanmar are just focused on the fragmentary interpretation, based on its peripheral grammar, which the learners cannot understand easily. Due to the fact, there is a limit to acquisition of the modern Korean language which can be used in various real situations.
In general, the ultimate goal of learners of foreign languages is to communicate fluently with native speakers. In addition to fluency, it is also essential for the learners of other languages to gain an understanding of the cultural and social background of the target language society, when using the target language. Generally, it is the address terms of the target language that we use basically, when talking with someone else. The address terms reveal the relationship between speaker and listener, their status and even speaker’s psychological emotions toward listener. The appropriate use of address terms contribute to having a smooth conversation between speaker and listener, but its inappropriate use might cause the listener to react negatively. Since language and culture of a society are closely connected each other, in the case of learning another language, it is necessary to compare fundamental linguistic system, cultural conventions, value, ways of thinking, emotional patterns and behavior patterns of the target language society with the learners’ own, as well as analyze and compare the common points and differences between the two sides. Even if Korea and Myanmar belong to the same Eastern culture, having many things in common in sociocultural terms, there are several differences in the aspect of address terms. Thus, this thesis compared and discussed the address terms of the two countries.
In Chapter 1 of introduction, I clarified the purpose and necessity of this research, examining the concepts of the address terms in Korea and Myanmar. Previous studies on the address terms have shown that Myanmar did not carry out researches as many as Korea.
In Chapter 2, first of all, I examined the system and the itemized characteristics of the two nations’ address terms, determining their common points and differences. Furthermore, I also discussed kinship containing many similar aspects in each country’s appellations. The both nations have undoubtedly used kinship broadly toward not only relatives, but also their neighbors, while the patterns of the use revealed a few differences.
In Chapter 3, I compared and contrasted the lineage systems between Korea and Myanmar. Regarding the expanded use of kinship , I compared the corresponding words and examined the features of each appellation. Additionally, I arranged some kinship that are likely to cause Myanmar learners to make a mistake, adding details on the kinship containing different meanings in the two nations.
In Chapter 4 of conclusion and proposal, I made a suggestion about how Myanmarese learners of Korean could acquire the Korean appropriately and efficiently, discussing the direction of future studies. I also mentioned the significance of this research and its limitations.
Besides, the aim of this study is to help the increasing Myanmar learners of Korean day by day, to understand the concepts of fundamental vocabulary of Korean appellations with more ease. In the case of address terms among other linguistic elements of a target language, dictionary-style explanations based on grammar excluding a variety of real situations and examples, only make the learners to have difficulty in acquiring address terms words based on natural conversations. Accordingly, this focused on itemizing a variety of appellations widely used in Korea recently, classifying systematically and arranging newly the Myanmar address terms corresponding to each Korean one. I hope that this thesis will contribute to helping build systematically basic concepts of Korean learning for the Myanmar learners who have had no opportunities to learn various general address terms of modern Korean because of concentrating on acquiring superficial use of Korean address terms so far.
