본 논문은 번역에서의 등가성이란 사회문화적 요소를 고려한 전체 문맥적인 관점에서 이루어져야 함을 전제하여, 문학텍스트에서 나타난 공손 표현 번역의 등가성을 보고자 하는 목적을 두고 전개된다. 이러한 논문의 목적을 달성하고자, 영어소설 The Great Gatsby, The Catcher in the Rye와 한국어소설 「삼포 가는 길」, 「엄마를 부탁해」와 각각의 번역문을 분석의 대상으로 삼는다. 이들은 공손성을 나타낼 수 있는 어휘의 격식성, 호칭표현, 간접 발화 행위, 의문형, 주어 선택 등의 다섯 가지를 분석의 기준으로 삼는다.
이러한 기준을 토대로 번역에서의 등가성을 살펴본 바, 영어소설에서는 어휘의 격식성, 호칭 표현, 간접 발화 행위에서 공손성의 등가가 이루어지지 않았으며, 한국어소설에서는 호칭 표현, 주어 선택, 간접 발화 행위에서 공손성의 등가가 이루어지지 않은 특성을 보임을 알 수 있다. 이처럼 문학 작품 속에서 공손성의 등가를 이루지 못한 경우는 사회문화적인 요소를 고려하지 않거나, 목표어 텍스트 위주의 번역에 의한 것임을 알 수 있다.
다음으로, 공손성의 번역의 등가가 문학텍스트에 일정 부분 영향을 미칠 수 있음을 살펴 분석한다. 즉, 등가를 이루지 못한 공손 표현은 전체 문맥적인 관점에서 볼 때, 문맥에 영향을 줄 가능성이 있음을 보았다. 특히, 특정 인물에 대한 캐릭터의 태도 변화, 캐릭터의 성격 변화, 목표어식 표현에 따른 문체의 변화 등의 문제가 생길 수 있음을 알 수 있다. 이와 같이, 공손 표현을 포함하여 번역에서의 등가의 실패는 작품의 문맥에도 영향을 끼쳐, 원문과는 다소 다르게 해석 될 오해의 소지가 있다.
이상의 분석을 토대로 살펴본 바, 본 논문은 문맥적인 측면에서 번역에서의 등가성에 의해서 나타날 수 있는 여러 가지 문제에 대해서 고찰해 보고자 한 시도라 할 수 있다. 또한 번역에서 나타날 수 있는 문제 중에서도 사회문화적인 요소에 의해 영향을 받아 나타나는 언어 표현 중의 하나인 공손성의 번역과 그 등가의 실현양상과 문제점에 대해서 제안하고자 하였다. 더불어 공손성의 번역과 그 등가성을 문학텍스트를 중심으로 분석함으로써, 번역의 등가의 문제가 글의 문맥에도 영향을 끼칠 수 있음을 보여주려는 시도로서도 그 의의를 찾아볼 수 있다.
더 나아가, 본 논문의 분석에서는 번역의 등가에서 간과해서는 안 될 중요한 사안들을 보였다는 점에 주목해야 한다. 하나는 번역가의 자의적인 판단에 의해 임의적으로 원문의 표현들을 삭제 혹은 변형하는 것은 원문의 미학적 가치나 작가의 의도를 제대로 반영하지 못할 수 있다는 위험성이 존재하므로, 지양할 필요가 있다는 것이다. 또 다른 하나는 수용자 중심적으로 목표어 식의 번역을 하게 되면 커뮤니케이션을 원활하게 한다는 긍정적 측면이 존재하지만, 그와 동시에 문학 작품이 가지고 있는 문체적 특징과 가치를 모두 담을 수 없다는 부정적인 측면 또한 존재한다는 것이다. 이처럼 본 논문은 번역가가 어떠한 태도를 가지고 번역 작업을 하느냐에 따라 수반될 수 있는 문제점들과 그 번역에서의 양면성을 보였다. 따라서 이러한 문학텍스트 번역에서의 공손성과 그 등가성에 대한 분석을 다룬 본 논문은 추후에 번역의 연구에서도 유용하게 이용될 수 있다.

Translation equivalence has been studied in various aspects. Among them, some analysts have mainly tried to define equivalence as expressive identity (Popovič 1976, Dressler 1972, Bassenett 1980). According to them, the source language expression is replaced by the target language expression that serves almost the same purpose in the culture related to target language.
The main goal of this research is to indicate politeness and translation equivalence between source text and target text based on literature. In order to achieve the goal, this research selects two English novels, which are The Great Gatsby, The Catcher in the Rye and the translated text and also two Korean novels, which are The Road to Sampo, and Please Look after Mom and the translated text. For this purpose, this research investigates politeness through the following five factors, which are closely related to politeness: ⅰ) a formality of expressions, ⅱ) address terms, ⅲ) indirect speech act, ⅳ) interrogative sentence, and ⅴ) the selection of agent in sentence.
The examination of this research indicates that there are some problems of translation equivalence. First of all, there are some problems of formality of expressions, address terms, and indirect speech act in English-Korean translation, which could influence on politeness strategies. Also, there are some problems of address terms, indirect speech act, and the selection of agent in sentence in Korean-English translation, which influence on politeness strategies, too.
After that, this study attempts to demonstrate how the problems of translation equivalence are related to text. When it comes to English-Korean translation, the problems have impacts not only on conveying words, but also on the personality of characters and character’s manner toward the other characters in text. And when it comes to Korean-English translation, it can be clearly shown that some expressions are translated into English forms, which is related to politeness strategies. And there is a possibility that this problem influences on the writer’s own literary style.
Finally, this research attempts to show the problems of equivalence in translation. Among many problems, this research targets at politeness expressions, which are one of the linguistic characteristics affected by social and cultural factors. And also, this research can be a suggestion that translation equivalence should be considered from textual aspect as well as expression itself. Additionally, this research attempts to suggest two important issues in terms of translation equivalence. First, translator should not arbitrarily delete or change the source text because this could make the source text be interpreted misleadingly. Secondly, if one is translated into target language form, there is a possibility that it loses the same literary value as the source text or does not reflect the writer’s intention. In this sense, this research of politeness in translation of literary texts can be used as a useful material for further translation studies.
