This thesis aims to presume the process and period of the acceptance of Japanese-Chinese letters fixed in Korean.
In this thesis, the Japanese-Chinese shown in the Korean textbook in the enlightenment period was extracted and analyzed to find what kind of, and how many Japanese was spread. This thesis also aims to find out the characters of the Japanese-Chinese letters shown in the textbook on the period of enlightenment with a comparison of Japanese-Chinese letters shown in other materials of the comtemporary period.
The textbooks used in this thesis are three books published early between 1895 and 1905 and ten books 1905 and 1910. This thesis tries to analyse the two-letter Chinese character used in those textbooks. And the discrimination of the Japanese-Chinese characters used in the textbooks is as follows: First, Chinese characters used in thirteen textbooks were extracted. Second, in the reference to 『Meiji-Language Dictionary(明治のことば辭典)』with the extracted Chinese letters, the Japanese-Chinese characters were determined. Third, from the precise research of『Korean-Chinese Dictionary(韓國漢字語辭典)』with the determined Japanese-Chinese characters, the exact time which was flowed in Korean textbooks was presumed. Fourth, for the change of meaning『Japanese Dictionary(日本國語大辭典)』and『Standard Korean Dictionary(표준국어대사전)』were used. Fifth, through the relative analysis of materials in enlightenment period, this thesis studied the distinctive features of Japanese-Chinese letters in enlightenment period.
As above process, the Japanese-Chinese letters shown in early- period textbooks in enlightenment period in second division, Japanese-Chinese letters shown in late-period textbooks in enlightenment period in third division, and the distinctive features of Japanese-Chinese letters shown in the textbooks in enlightenment period in fourth division was studied. And finally in the last division, this thesis tries to suggest the future plan after research and analysis.
As a process of the research,
* Through the total research, 9,837 single Chinese letters were extracted from 24,398 whole Chinese letters already extracted. from these Chinese letters, 267 Japanese-Chinese letters were extracted.
*In focusing on Chinese letters already registered in『Korean-Chinese Dictionary』, this thesis arranged 47 Chinese letters circulated with transformed meanings in enlightenment and 4 Chinese letters in which the discrimination for the period of acceptance is not clear.
* As the result from the research about the circulation of Japanese -Chinese letters in every year, 59 Chinese letters, 22.1% of 267 letters, in the textbooks published between 1895 and 1896, 134 Chinese letters, 50% of them, between 1906 and 1907, 77 letters, 28.9% of them, in 1908, and 82 letters, 30.8% of them, in 1909 were found to be circulated.
* Through the research about the features of Chinese letters classified by glossaries, the classification according to the preliminary research material is as follows: 18.0% in science·culture field, 9.0% in politics field, 8.6% in education · communication field, 4.5% in economy field and 4.1 % in time·location field. This shows the reality of the change in enlightenment period. and in the classification by the『Word List by Semantic Principles(分類語彙表)』, 「noun form」 holds 93.9%, 「adjective form」 holds 6.1% and 「verb form」 never appears. This means that newly accepted words almost belong to noun form. The reason verb form and adjective form appears very rarely is that they can easily express them with their existing chinese letters. In meaningful aspect, the chinese letters which express abstract relationship show preponderance. And the Chinese words that mean human activities and the subject of the human activities rank next. This is why these words reflected the social features in enlightenment period for which human spiritual change and social activities are needed at the time of accepting new idea and civilization.
* Between 1895 and 1909 the time the textbook was published in enlightenment, 89 Japanese-Chinese letters, 33.3% of them, which didn't show in the materials in enlightenment period, but showed only in the textbook at that time, were identified. These Chinese letters were accepted throughout enlightenment period and spread. The textbook in enlightenment period to accept Japanese-Chinese letters and spread.
In this way, by the comparison with the materials different from the time of acceptance in enlightenment period and the Japanese-Chinese letters shown in the textbook in enlightenment period, this thesis proved how Japanese-Chinese letters circulated. However much more materials and deeper analysis for the practical study are needed more and more, and also much more precise study is necessary for the study of the correspondent change in Japanese-Chinese letters and actual usage in public.
