The purpose of the present study is to show whether Korean learners of English acquire the word order involved with such expressions as dative constructions and subordinate-main clauses, which are known to vary with their information values (given vs. new information). To this end, the following experiment was performed: 150 subjects were chosen from three different groups of students (50 1st graders and 50 2nd graders in high school, and 50 freshmen in college). One test was administered to these subjects to see to what extent they had achieved the right word order in applying the above constructions. The test consisted of 20 questions: 10 questions about dative constructions and 10 questions about subordinate clauses. The results of the experiment are summarized as follows.
First, the rate of the subjects’choosing right correct word order for the dative constructions and subordinate-main clauses abiding by the information value in input questions was as much as 20%lower than that of native speakers. The information value seems to impact on determining word order by native speakers, but it doesn’t seem to play much of a role in determining the word order selection by Korean learners. Second, the subjects are more likely to choose the correct word order answers to the questions that require focus or new information to fall on the IO than the DO of their answers. Similarly, the subjects are more likely to come up with the correct word order for the syntactic pattern with the subordinate clauses bearing new information than that with the main clauses hosting focus or new information. The current study also finds that the corresponding syntactic patterns to the above two patterns (dative constructions with IO bearing new information and subordinate clauses hosting focus) are more likely or in default employed in Korean. These syntactic features trigger a negative transfer in the process of acquiring the right word order in terms of information value of the dative constructions and subordinate-main clauses by Korean learners. Finally, this study shows that variations in word order based on information value have (to some extent) yet to be learned by the Korean learners at all levels of English proficiency.
