최근에 평생 교육적 차원에서 피아노를 배우는 성인 학생들이 늘고 있다. 성인들이 피아노를 배우는 목적은 자아 실현, 여가 선용, 취미 활동 등으로 음악을 통해 즐거움을 얻고, 풍부한 정서 생활을 누리는데 있다. 하지만 다수의 성인 학습자들이 학습을 지속적으로 유지하지 못하고, 도중에 포기하는 경우가 많은데, 이는 학습자의 특성을 고려하지 않은 교수 활동과 교재의 선택에서 비롯된다고 본다.
이 연구는 성인 학습자들이 학습을 지속하지 못하는 요인이 학습 교재 에 있다고 보고, 성인용 피아노 교재 중에서 두 교재를 선정하여 비교 분석한 연구이다. 두 교재의 특징과 장, 단점을 살펴봄으로써 성인 학생을 지도하는 교사와 성인 학생들에게 적절한 교재를 선택 할 수 있도록 도움을 주어 보다 효과적이고 지속적인 성인 피아노 교육이 되도록 하는 것에 연구의 목적이 있다.
분석 자료로는 기존에 사용되었던 베스틴(Bastien) 성인용 교재와 2005년 새롭게 번역되어 출판된 어드벤쳐(Adventure) 성인용 교재를 택하였다.
분석방법은 두 교재의 전반적인 구성을 살펴보고, 내용 영역으로 피아노를 위한 준비 학습, 음이름 학습, 그래프 보표 학습, 음계 학습, 화음과 반주법, 레퍼토리, 페달, 청음 학습, 듀엣 연주, 즉흥 연주의 분야로 나누어 비교 분석하고 장단점을 도출하였다.
연구의 결과 두 교재의 장점은 다음과 같다.
어드벤쳐 교재는 목차의 편집이 간결하고, 단원의 핵심 개념을 한눈에 파악할 수 있도록 구성하였으며, 학습 초기 단계에서부터 음색, 다이나믹 등 음악적 표현을 강조한다. 또한, 성인의 학습 욕구를 반영하여, 다양한 화성 반주를 실습할 수 있도록 하였고, 조옮김, 청음, 즉흥 연주, 듀엣 연주 등 다양한 음악적 활동을 포함하고 있어 포괄적인 음악성을 기를 수 있다.
베스틴 교재는 중간 중간에 복습 코너를 두고 있어서 학습한 음악적 개념들을 반복 학습하여 확실히 익힐 수 있도록 하였고, 음악사와 작곡가에 관해 폭넓은 배경 지식을 제공한다. 성인 학습자가 중시하는 화음과 반주 부분에 있어서 건반의 위치를 이용하여 보다 쉽게 학습할 수 있으며, 블루스, 소울 등 여러 종류의 레퍼토리를 다루고 있어 성인 학습자의 다양한 기호를 만족시킨다.
교재의 단점 및 보완해야 할 점은 베스틴 교재는 다양한 레퍼토리를 다루었지만, 우리의 정서를 반영한 음악은 전무하며, 미국적 성향이 강하다는 것을 들 수 있다. 어드벤쳐 교재는 한국어로 번역하여 출판하면서 Original 교재에는 수록되지 않은 우리나라 음악을 몇 곡 소개 하고 있기는 하나 고유한 우리의 가락을 살려주지 못한 점이 단점이다. 두 교재 모두 다양한 음악적 능력 개발을 한 권의 교본으로 압축하였기 때문에 연습곡의 수가 많지 않은 점도 보완해야 할 점이다.
성인을 지도하는 교사나 성인 학습자는 특정 교본만을 맹목적으로 따르기 보다는 각 교재의 장단점을 확실히 파악하여 적절한 교재를 선택함으로써 학습 목표를 보다 효과적으로 달성해야 할 것이다.

Nowadays the number of adults learning piano for a lifelong education purpose is increasing. The purposes of Adults’ learning piano are to realize self, to make good use of spare time, and to elevate there interests, which lead them to enjoy pleasure through music and to live a life full of affect and emotion. However, most of the adult students fail to continue learning and tend to drop out. This learning failure is usually caused by inappropriate instruction and mis-choice of textbooks since the characteristics of adult learners are not well taken into account.
This study selected and compared the two piano textbooks for adults based on the hypothesis that the learning discontinuation problem in adult learners is mainly caused by inappropriate textbook selection. The objective of this study is to provide some hints for adults to continue their piano learning by helping instructors and students select more appropriate and effective textbook through examination of the strengths and weaknesses of the two textbooks.
Preexisting Bastien textbook for adults and Adventure textbook for adults that was newly translated and published in 2005 were selected for the analysis of this study.
Firstly, the overall structure of these two textbooks was examined. After that, chapters were divided into various fields such as preparation, name of notes, graph staff, scales, chord and accompaniment, repertory, pedal, ear training, duet performance and improvisation. Finally, after comparing and analyzing these fields, their strengths and weakness were drawn.
The results showed that the strengths of the two textbooks are as following: Adventure textbook for adult is edited neatly and organized in a way that it allows learner to easily understand the core concept of each unit. It also emphasizes the importance of musical expressions such as tone and dynamic from the early learning on and reflects adult's learning desire to allow learners to practice with various accompanying pattern. It also includes various musical activities such as transposition, ear training, improvisation, duet performance and so on, which allows for increase of musicality.
Bastine textbook for adults inserts interim review sections so that it allows learners to repeat what they have learned to become familiar with them. It also provides broad background knowledge regarding music history and composers and enables adult learners to easily learn chord and accompaniment using the position of keyboard. It also addresses various repertories such as blues and soul so that it satisfies various tastes of adult learners.
Although these textbooks are good in many ways, they have shortcomings as well. Bastien textbook for adults has various repertories, but it doesn't contain any music that reflects Korean’s emotions and has strong musical taste for Americans. As for Adventure textbook, although it introduces some of Korean music not included in the original book when translated, it does not revive our nation's tune. In addition, since both textbooks compactly include contents for the development of various musical abilities into one textbook, there are not many songs for practice in it, which is also another shortcoming to be overcome.
Instructor for adults or adult learners should not purposelessly follow a particular textbook. Instead, they should understand the strengths and weaknesses of each textbook and choose the most appropriate textbook for them to achieve their learning purpose more effectively.
