‘풍속화’는 말 그대로 인간의 생활상을 직접 대상으로 삼은 그림을 일컫는다. 그런데 그 의미에는 근대 회화에서 현실 재현의 사실주의 개념과 달리 민중의 생산 활동과 생활 주변의 평범... ‘풍속화’는 말 그대로 인간의 생활상을 직접 대상으로 삼은 그림을 일컫는다. 그런데 그 의미에는 근대 회화에서 현실 재현의 사실주의 개념과 달리 민중의 생산 활동과 생활 주변의 평범한 일상사를 세속적인 것으로 생각한 중세 지식층의 사상 의식이 내포되어 있다. 풍속화속의 풍속은 말 그대로 새로운 세상을 맛보게 하는 파격적인 일이었다. 조선후기 사회변동의 폭을 담아내는 내용과 형식의 변모를 눈여겨보게 되었다. 동시에 풍속화에 등장하는 인물상들을 뜯어보면서 다양한 계층과 남녀노소의 성격이나 표정을 그토록 정확히 꼬집어낸 전형성에 새삼 감복하였다. 조선시대 서민들의 일상과 당시 사회적 배경과 문화 예술 전반에 나타나는 일상적인 모습을 정감과 애정이 넘치는 모습으로 표현하였다. 조선시대 풍속화 속에 내포되어 있는 한국의 해학적 미와 조선시대 화가들의 새로운 회화에 의해 바탕으로 그려졌다. 그리하여 오늘날 주변에 밀집에 있는 것들을 화폭에 담는 의식의 전환이 생기기 시작하였다. 그 시대의 사회상과 오늘날 현대 사회에 있어서 사회, 경제, 사상, 문화 등의 새로운 문화 예술이 이어져 오고 있다. 우리의 인식 속에서는 어떻게 받아들여지고 오늘날 현재까지 전해져 왔는가를 풍속화의 기본 개념부터 살펴보고, 조선후기 풍속화에 나타난 해학의 세계에 대해서도 연구해보고자 한다. 풍속화의 주된 소재는 서민들의 일상사가 주를 이루고 있다. 서민들의 삶 속에는 그들의 문화에 깊이 배어있을 것이므로 당시의 서민 문화가 현대에 있어서 어떠한 영향을 받고 발전해 왔는지, 조선시대 서민들의 모습과 오늘날 현대에 있어서 어떠한 변화가 있었는지를 연구해 보고자 한다.

The custom depicted in genre paintings was literally shocking as it gave viewers a taste of a new world. The genre painters in the latter half of Joseon kept an eye on changes to the content and form that embraced the breadth of social changes. They looked at the figures of people in genre paintings closely and pinpointed both young and old men and women of various classes with such accuracy that it made viewers admire them anew. They described the daily lives of common people, the social backgrounds, and the culture and art scenes in Joseon with plenty of warmth and affection. The genre paintings of Joseon had humorous aesthetics of Korea inherent in them based on the emerging painting style of the painters in Joseon. These painters also started to change their consciousness, depicting the density of things in their current surroundings on the drawing . There is a continuing line of new culture and art encompassing the society, economy, ideology and culture as it traces its origin to the social aspects of the times and extends to modern society today. This study set out to examine how the genre paintings of Joseon were accepted in the consciousness of people and to track the process of their transmission until present day by reviewing the basic concepts of genre paintings and delving into the world of humor found in the genre paintings of the latter half of Joseon. The main materials in genre paintings were the daily lives of common people.
