기술문명과 산업사회의 대두로 인해 지역적이고 구체적인 장소는 인간으로부터 소외되었다. 뿐만 아니라 장소가 삶의 터전이 아닌 단순하게 물리적이고 도구적인 개념의 공간으로 전락했... 기술문명과 산업사회의 대두로 인해 지역적이고 구체적인 장소는 인간으로부터 소외되었다. 뿐만 아니라 장소가 삶의 터전이 아닌 단순하게 물리적이고 도구적인 개념의 공간으로 전락했다. 이와 함께 고유 지역 전통 문화나 관습 또한 사라진 실정이다. 그 결과 삶의 터전과 지역 생태계 및 지역 전통 문화 복원이 주된 관심사로 떠오르면서 생태지역주의 논의도 함께 대두되고 있다. 생태지역주의는 지역생태계에 대한 재인식의 필요성을 제기하는 동시에 장소에 뿌리내리는 방법을 강구하는데 로버트 프로스트의 작품세계에서도 이와 같은 시도가 나타난다. 프로스트는 뉴잉글랜드 지방 곳곳의 중심에 들어가 직접 체험하고 경험한 내용을 바탕으로 작품을 그려냈다. 그의 작품들은 인간이 대지의 한 장소에 완전하게 뿌리를 내리고 삶을 영유하기 위해서는 우선적으로 그 장소를 잘 알고 이해해야 함을 드러낸다. 그리고 이 이해를 바탕으로 그 지역에 맞는 생활양식을 갖춰야 한다는 것을 보여준다. 이와 더불어 그의 작품들은 장소가 인간과 밀접한 관계를 맺는 특별한 정서적 공간임을 드러낸다. 따라서 머무는 장소에 완전하게 뿌리를 내리고 정착하기 위해서는 장소와의 유대관계를 강화해야한다는 것이다. 이 논문의 목적은 프로스트의 작품들을 생태지역주의로 조망함으로써 보다 더 그의 작품세계를 폭넓게 이해하고자 하는 것이다. 이를 통해 지역 생태계와 머무는 장소를 보호하고 보존하기 위해 어떤 자세와 노력들이 필요한지 알아보고자 한다. 주제어 : Robert Frost, New England, Bioregionalism, 장소의 소외, 뿌리 내리기
Ever since the emergence of industrialization and modern civilization, distinct regional places have been estranged from humankind. Ever since the emergence of industrialization and modern civilization, distinct regional places have been estranged from humankind. Accordingly, life-places have degenerated to a mere space in a physical and instrumental sense. Traditional regional culture and regional customs can now hardly be found. Under these circumstances, the issues of how to recover the life-place, regional ecosystem and the traditional regional culture became the main concern of the ecologically minded people in modern society. Bioregionalism is a theory which stresses the importance of re-recognizing the regional ecosystem and seeking for the ways on how to form a deeply rooted life in the place. These aspects of bioregionalism can also be found in Robert Frost's poetry. Frost wrote poetry based on his experiences in the very centers of New England regions. His works show that in order to lead a deeply rooted life in a place, one should first know about the place thoroughly and form an understanding about the place. Only through this intimate understanding of the place, humankind can keep a place-oriented lifestyle. In Frost’s poems, place is a special and affective space to form intimate relationships with humankind. One needs to fully settle in the place by pursuing a deeply rooted life and enforcing the strong ties with the place. The purpose of this is to grasp a broader understanding of Frost's works through a bioregionalistic perspective. This would enable us to have a better understanding on what kind of attitudes and efforts are needed in order to protect and preserve both the regional ecosystem and the health of the life-places.
